ATHLETICS

INTER-CLUB EVENTS AT ENGLISH PARK

UNINSPIRING CONTESTS

The track at English Park was in excellent order on Saturday when the interclub athletic competition was resumed. The racing, however, was uninspiring, and no fast times were recorded. At the end of the day Technical had established a big lead on points in Section 1., and in Section 11. Presbyterian had a good margin over Old Boys. Although neither is yet in the best con-' dition, V. P. Boot and C. H. Matthews both ran well. R. Dynes stayed with Matthews nearly all the way over the three miles, but on the last lap Matthews went away with ease. In the 880 yards Boot did not have such an easy win, D, H. Oldfield chasing him right up to the tape. J. D. Nelligan won the 220 yards low hurdles without trouble, but he could not get round H. McCaskey in the longer hurdle event..

An attempt was made on the New Zealand record for the pole vault by W. Kane. He won the event at Xoft lljin, and the bar was then raised to lift 51n, half an inch more than the record, but he was unable to clear it. At the end of the programme the total points were:— Section I.—Technical 116, Canterbury 60, Sydenham 39, Civil Service 18. Section ll.—Presbyterian 75, Old Boys 49, University 35, Sumner 26, Rangiora 13. The results of the day’s events were:— SECTION I. A Grade 220 Yards—R. D. Thompson (Canterbury) 1, H.
