MAGISTRATE’S COURT
SATURDAY (Before Mr E. C., Levvey, S.M.) FALSE PRETENCE
Arthur Edward Britt was charged with obtaining £4 13s from the employment division of the Labour Department by false pretence between November 16, 1935, and November 31, 1936. Chief-Detective W. H. Dunlop said that the accused had been on sustenance, and had failed to disclose to the department sums earned at race meetings by his wife, amounting to the sum named in the charge. Britt was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within 12 months, and to repay the sum of £4 13s as directed by the probation officer. REMANDED Frederick Kenneth.', Risdon (Mr N. S. Bowie) was remanded till January 21 on a charge of stealing goods, valued at £l3 19s, the property of Robert Duncan Benjamin. Bail was allowed in the sum of £IOO, with one surety of £IOO, accused to report daily to the police.
CHILDREN’S COURT (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., Mrs T. Green, and Mr W. M. West, J’s.P.) ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF AIR RIFLE. A boy, aged 14, wascharged with being in possession of a firearm —an air rifle —while under 15 years of age. The police said that the boy had been practising in his backyard, firing at a target on a garage. A woman neighbour had complained that she had been gardening at the time and a pellet had passed near her. The boy’s father said that there was a macrocarpa hedge four feet thick and 20 feet high. separating the properties. Mr Levvey: Still, it is a bit risky. See that, he doesn’t do it in the future. If any damage is done you will be held responsible. The police claimed the rifle, as they said it was automatically forfeited by the conviction of any person under 16 who was the possessor of a firearm of any description. CHARGE OF THEFT A boy of 16 pleaded guilty to stealing £1 in money. The police said that the money had been taken from some clothes in the dressing sheds of a public bath. The boy had three previous convictions. The mony was ordered to be refunded and the boy was committed to the care of the State
MONEY STOLEN
A boy, aged 12, pleaded guilty to stealing £1 in money. The police said that he had been playing in a neighbour’s house and had stolen the money from an overcoat hanging on a door. When interviewed, he had said he had found the money in the sandhills, but had later admitted the theft. He had one previous conviction. The money had already been refunded, and the boy was committed to the care of the State. \
