ARMS AND MEN FOR SPAIN

GERMAN AND ITALIAN

ATTITUDE

INO FURTHER SUPPLIES

GENERAL IRAN CO BELIEVED '' STRONG ENOUGH TO WIN (UNITED TRESS ASSOCIATION" - COI'VUKJiIT.) (Received January 15, 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 14. " rp he Rome correspondent of the "Daily Mail" says that it is believed that Italy and Germany have decided against the dispatch of further volunteers and munitions to Spain, but if the future shows that France and Russia are continuing to send help to the Spanish Government Italy and Germany will reconsider their decision. It is thought in Rome that General Franco's offensives should result in sweeping the Government forces from all parts of Spain, except perhaps Catalonia. It is understood that both General Goering and Count Ciano have reaffirmed that it is contrary to Italian and German interests to permit bolshevism to take root in Spain. General Goering gave an assurance that Germany had no territorial aims anywhere in the Mediterranean. Signor Mussolini emphasised that the English and Italian Mediterranean agreement does not interfere with Germany's colonial aspirations, since the colonies on which Germany has set her eyes are not near the Mediterranean. An earlier message from Rome stated that General Goering was offusively welcomed on his arrival by Signor Mussolini, the Foreign Minister (Count Ciano), Signor Achilla Starace, Secretary-General of the Fascist party, and many other high authorities. A Black Shirt guard of honour was mounted inside the beflagged station, and a band played the Italian and German national anthems. Cheering crowds outside, shouted "Heil, Hitler," as General Goering drove off to the historic yilla Madama, where he will stay. The Rome correspondent of the "Morning Post" says it is believed that Genertal Goering intends to discuss the Italian viewpoint on the possibility of an understanding between. Germany and Britain on the lines of the recent assurances exchanged by Britain and Italy about ' the Mediterranean.
