FARM LABOUR PROBLEM

TO THE EDITOH OP TUB PHESB. " , Sir, —Newspaper reports seem to indicate that at the present time there is a shortage of farm labour, particularly of the casual variety. It is rumoured that, in view of the infantile paralysis epidemic, the schools will not reopen on due date. Would it not be possible for the Government to arrange . for the unemployed teachers to be drafted to the various farms requiring assistance? As the teachers are already on full pay, the farmer could pay the award rate of wages to the education boards; or, alternately, the education boards stop the teacher's pay and allow him to receive his pay direct from the farmer, if he chose. Probably the majority of teachers would welcome the opportunity of a little hard work to recover from the effects of the school holidays.—Yours, etc.', DOOLEY. January 15, 1937.
