SINGLES FINAL

FINE EXPdsITION OF

GAME

HA WORTH'S GOOD PLAY

IN RINKS

(I'RESS ASSOCIATION TEI.EGUAM.) WELLINGTON, January 15. The singles final between Mingins and Spearman was a wonderful exhibition of the game, in spite of rain, which was gradually getting thicker as they played. Mingins was the more consistent drawing player except toward the finish, when Spearman seemed able to place the bowls exactly where he pleased, and drove accurately also. Driving won him the game. Spearman is a comparative newcomer to the game, having started as a member of the Upper Hutt Club about eight years ago. He has some club successes to his credit, but this is the first time he has gained prominence in a New Zealand tournament.

Brackenridge (Lyall Bay), the previous singles champion, who for four years has been champion of singles champions in the Wellington centre, was defeated by Ergebretsen (Napier) in an interesting match. Both played good bowls, and the last few heads ri vetted the attention of spectators. The singles match between the Napier club mates. Engebretsen and Thomas, also attracted great attention from the spectators. In the semi-final of the singles. Spearman showed himself too good for Thomas, and by the twentieth head was 9 up. The game was not as good a display of bowls as the ThomasEngebretsen game. Rinks Competition

Gray's defeat of Perry in the rinks in the morning, and his automatic reception of a bye in the next round, brought him into the final with two lives, where he will meet one-lifer teams. The totals were even all through the game, except towards the conclusion, when Gray, had a handy lead which Perry could not overtake. Gray got four on the second end. Perry four on the third, and there followed threes, twos, and ones to both sides. Gray was one up when they started the seventeenth end, from which Gray pot four. This was the turningpoint of the match, for Perry did not retrieve the position.. Perry.got one on the eighteenth*, Gray one on the nineteenth

and Perry one on the twentieth. Perry needed two from the last head to tie. Gray's lead. S. Gray, drew a good shot with his second; but his No. 3 trailed the jack and lay one. Perry's No. 3 ran at it, but took out Perry's secord shot. Perry took the jack into the ditch, but gave Gray three. There was lit,tle hope left for Perry, and Gray drew another counter to win 26-21. Haworth's Defeat of London

Haworth gave London short shrift. He started off with four on the first head, and winning all but two heads, had 13 on the board to London's two by the ninth head. London got nearly half his total score for the match on the tenth head—a seven. However, Haworth drew away again, ana was 10 up three heads later. London looked nearest to winning at the conclusion of the seventeenth head, when he had won four heads in succession, and was four down. Haworth scored on the last three heads, 3,2, 3 and won 27-15. Haworth showed a shade better form than Silbery to win the game, which they played to see which should meet Gray in the final. Haworth led on the scoreboard from the beginning of the game to the end. He was 10 up by the eighth, and Silbery got five on the ninth and two on the tenth, so that Haworth was then

only three up. Ones on *%,? Si** heads placed him «x got one on the fourteenthi»g£&»* fifteenth. Haworth had one „, p sixteenth head, and seventeenth.
