REGATTA CLUB
YACHTS COMPETING AT LYTTELTON RACING IN SANDERS CUP WEEK The Greymouth Regatta Club will be represented by two 18-foot M class yachts, a Silver Fern dinghy, and an Idle-Along class yacht -at the regatta which will be held at Lyttelton during Sanders Cup week. The M class yacht Mako, sailed by P. McDonald, and Mystic, sailed by C. Crown, will compete in the race for the Britannia Cup, which, has been given for the 18-foot championship of Canterbury, in the Whitford Cup, which is an open race for 18-footers organised by the Canterbury Sailing and Power Boat Club, and probably in the race for the Beryl Stacey trophy. Vagabond, which will be sailed by R. Moffatt, will be an entrant in the two races for Idle-Alongs on Saturday, February 6, and Awatea (T. Tissiman) will probably start in the Irene Stacey trophy race and the two handicap races for Z, D, and Y classes. If a boat can be obtained, it is possible that a Greymouth crew will compete in the race for the X class championship of Canterbury.
SALVAGING CARGO OF ABEL TASMAN
TIMBER SAVED TOTALS 500,000 FEET
Of the 800,000 feet of timber aboard the steamer Abel Tasman when she was wrecked on the North Beach, Greymouth, 500,000 feet has been salvaged, and it is estimated that 50,000 feet has been lost. The remaining 250,000 feet is still in the ship, but cannot be saved until the hull has been broken up. The Abel Tasman syndicate has not decided what it will do with the hull.
CHILDREN NOT TO ENTER MUNICIPAL BATHS
The Health Department has instructed the West Coast Swimming Centre that children under 14 are not to be admitted to the Greymouth Municipal Baths until further notice. SCRUB FIRE AT COBDEN Some scrub at the lower end of Fox street, Cobden, close to some houses, caught fire about 2 p.m. yesterday. The Cobden Fire Brigade extinguished the lire before any damage was done. GREYMOUTH PERSONAL NOTES Miss Cecil Hannan (Winnie street) has received advice of her appointment to the nursing staff of Karitane Hospital, Christchurch. She will begin duty on January 23. Adjutant and Mrs W. Knight have arrived in Greymouth from Timaru to take charge of the Greymouth Corps of the Salvation Army, in succession to Major and Mrs Ransom. They were welcomed at the Salvation Army Hall on Thursday night, when SergeantMajor Harris presided. Speeches of welcome and several musical items were given.^

HIGHEST TEMPERATURE THIS
SUMMER
The highest temperature recorded at Greymouth this summer, 79 degrees, was registered yesterday. A warm easterly wind, similar to the northwester of Canterbury, blew all day, and at 9 a.m. the temperature was 67 degrees, compared with 55 degrees at 6 a.m. The warm weather was all the more appreciated, as there has been little sunshine and much rain on the West Coast for some time.

With more competitors out, especially in the running events, the evening sports meeting held in Victoria square on Thursday was a marked improvement on meetings held previously this season. There was a fair attendance at the half-yearly meeting of the St. Patrick's branch of the Hibernian Society at Greymouth on Thursday night. Bro. J. DowalL presided. HALF-HOLIDAY IN WESTLAND COUNTY
The Westland County Council has decided that the half-holiday in the county for the ensuing year shall be Wednesday, as formerly.
