f NEW ZEALAND RINKS TOURNEY EIGHTEEN TEAMS LEFT IN CONTEST «_ YESTERDAY’S PLAY IN SINGLES AND PAIRS (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, January 13. Eighteen teams, five of which have still two lives, remain in .the rinks championship at the New Zealand bowling tournament as a result of three rounds of postsection play to-day. Prominent rinks eliminated were those skipped by Bremner, Walker, Shore, and Fielding. Five games of pairs and three games of singles were played also. The greens were keen In the morning, but towards noon the sky clouded over and light rain fell, making the greens slower in the afternoon. •

Rinks skipped by the following playeiS lost two games to-day, and are out of the competitions:—Bremner, Casey, Bull, Mitchell, Higgs, Bewley, Dee, Anderson, Pavitt, Wells, Gee, Reid, Bedell. Walker, Middleton, Shore, and Fielding. A close and exciting finish occurred in the third round of the rinks between the two-lifers, McWhannell and Skoglund. All through the game there was little between the totals. McWhannell needed five to win with three heads to go, and just failed in a great effort, Skoglund winning 21-20. ... An extra head had to be played between Edwards and Wells in the rinks. On the twentieth head Edwards was two down on the board, and had one shot, but got another. Through a wick tying, he drew shot on the last head, and put In a block to win the game by one point. Reid and Deare also had a close game, Reid scoring two on the last head and winning by one. Bremner was not quite up to winning form, and went out of both singles and rinks during the day. His rink was defeated by McWhannell in the first round of the rinks. McWhannell started heavy scoring right from the beginning, his side of the card for the first seven heads reading 5,4, 0,4, 0,2, 1 (total 16), while Bremner got only two. Bremner never really overcame the handicap which those early heads imposed on him. Best, the only two-lifer left in, the singles at the commencement of play today. was not in good form, and was defeated by Spearman 21-10. Between the seventh end and the seventeenth Best scored well; but Spearman still led by nine. Spearman maintained his advantage, and neither the twentieth nor the twenty-first head was played. Evans beat Bennett in a singles game In which the fortunes of the contestants showed unusual fluctuations. Bennett won the first head, but lost the next six, and was eight down when Evans threw the jack for the eighth. By the fourteenth, however, Bennett led by one. After that, Evans obtained an advantage which he gradully improved, and he won 22-15 on the twentieth. The singles match between Bremner and Hadwin attracted a large gallery, which was treated to a clever display of drawing. Hadwin had only a slight advantage on the heads, although the margin after the twentieth was sufficient to make the playing of the twenty-first necessary. Hicks lost his pairs game with Livingstone in the afternoon through being just a little too strong in the delivery of the last bowl. He needed three to tie and to obtain them he trailed kitty towards his own woods, but he carried it a few Inches too far, and the back bowl Livingstone’s lead had played deprived him of victory. Livingstone won 24-22. .During the game Livingstone got a six. Results:— PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP Post-Section Play First Round Cometti (Hataitai) 21, Lomas (Kelburn) 20.
