Personal Mr J. Payne, of Lyttelton, has returned from a motor tour of the East and West Coasts, via Nelson. Magistrate’s Court « Mr F. F. Reid, S.M., presided at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Duncan Cameron Mac Donald, licensee of the British Hotel, pleaded guilty to a charge of supplying liquor to a person under the age of 21 years. . Sergeant D. Wilson said the offence was somewhat different to the usual one. An engineer of an overseas steamer had sent a youth from the ship to the hotel for two bottles of beer. ■ The youth, who was 17 years of age, had acted quite innocently, being under the impression that the law m New Zealand was the same as in’ England, where' a person over the age of 16 years could purchase liquor. The defendant had . supplied the liquor to the youth, who was accosted by Constahle C. Jackways as he left the hotel. The defendant had always conducted the hotel in a satisfactory manner. Mac Donald told the court that it had been a practice for officers and engineers to send their stewards ashore for liquor. He knew that the youth must be under 21, but was satisfled that the liquor was for the engineer, who was a friend of the defendant. He was convicted and fined 20s and ordered to pay costs, 10s.
