Second Successive Win Trebleack recorded his second successive win in the High-Weight Handicap. He waited in behind the pacemaker. Smoko, to the distance and then came away to win decisively. Smoko beat the others just as easily. Blazon, who went down very short in his preliminary, appeared to be third; but Tautau Maid was placed third and King Willow fourth, However, there was little between the three at the post. A Close Tussle After losing a little ground at the start of the Waiau Trot, the favourite,, Abel, soon ran to the front and was followed to the straight, by Happy King. Aparima (who also lost some ground shortly after the start), Capri, and Walter Gay, the field being in close order with the exception of Gold Valley, who had tailed off early. Happy King and Abel had a good tussle all the way down the straight, and the former got his neck in front in the last few strides. Capri was two .lengths away third, and Walter Gay a fair fourth. The winner broke a long run of “outs” for J. McLennan. Good Finishing Run It was with a good finishing run that Corban won the Novice Handicap. He was sixth into the straight, and with a'

great burst wide out won going away from Coxcomb, who also made up a lot of ground from the top of the straight. Mona Song was a good third; but she was always well placed, and had every chance. Golden Song also tired and ran into fourth place after looking a winner at the distance. Western Song made most of the running, and was two lengths clear at the turn: but he again stopped badly and finished fifth. The favourite, Verdure, was second all the way to he straight, and then faded righ out. Fog Peak got a bad run, and did well to finish sixth. A Surprise Victory There was a surprise In the Centenary Cup. the winner being a novice performer, Ashaway. It was a good performance, as the pace was on all the way, and Ashaway came from fourth position at the top of the straight to win going away from Honest Maid, who had a lot of ground to make up, in the run home and beat Wall Street comfortably. Ocean Singer was prominent in third place to the straight, and ran into fifth place. Wild Career also stopped, and was a moderate fourth. Viking tried to win. all the way, and Wild Career went with him from the five furlongs post. - With three furlongs to go the pair had a lead of three lengths; but both stooped badly over the last two furlongs. Viking was a bad last. Won by a Nose Rodeur and Ballad fought out the finish of the Orawai Hack Handicap, and the former just got there by a nose after a ding-dong battle down the straight. Gipsy Fair was soon clear in the lead, and had a margin of two lengths into the straight from Rodeur, Clara Bow, and Ballad, who were racing practically level. At that stage. Rodeur had Gipsy Fair’s measure at the distance, and battled on to beat Ballad by a nose. Ballad would have won with a clear run in the straight, and was in front a stride past the post. Rompalong, who was having his first race in Southland, was finishing on in fourth place, but was indifferently handled, and he is a very likely early winner. Patricia Holm was left at the post. Decisive Victory. Worthy Claire was favourite, but at a good price, for the Aparima Trot, and she recorded a decisive win after being pacemaker from end to end. Picotee was practically on level terms with Worthy Claire all the' way to the straight, wi'th Mishap and Lucky Lee in close attendance, and Chief Drusus handy. Worthy Claire drew away in the straight and the tangling Mishap beat Picotee easily for second money. There was a gap of five lengths to the fourth horse. Lucky Lee, who was followed by Chief Drusus and Walter Gay. • Ashaway Again A penalty of 101 b for his success in the Centenary Cup did not stop Ashaway from, winning the Lilburn Handicap, and the decisive manner in which he beat the opposition in fast time showed that his other win was no fluke. He waited in fourth place to the straight, and won going away from Island Linnet, who put up a good performance after being last away from the barrier. Young Sentinel ran to the front inside the first two furlongs from Archollie, who took charge at the home turn, but stopped in fourth place. Young Sentinel also faded into fifth place at the finish. Best Finish of Day Viking got the best of a moving start in the Fowle Memorial, and this advantage stood to him in the best finish of the day. He was always among the leaders, and stalled off a strong challenge from Beam by a neck. All Humbug was in second position to the straight, and was a neck away third. Cleaner, who was slow away, was a fair fourth.
