NIUE ISLANDERS DECLINE TO LOAD SHIP Because of their religious beliefs, which would not permit them to break the Sabbath,. the natives of Niue Island refused to load the Maui Pomare when she arrived there on Sunday, January 3. The vessel would have waited until the following day, but a gale came up and the. Maui. Pomare was forced to put to sea: • As she was already two days behind schedule, she could not return to the* island, and continued on her voyage for New Zealand, leaving about 2000 cases of bananas which were ready for shipment to be dumped in the sea.
