Miss Julia Flynn has been appointed chief inspector of secondary schools in Victoria, in succession to Mr J. A. Seitz, who is now director of education. Miss Flynn, who has a fine record as an educationist and as a public servant, was appointed assistant chief inspector in 1928. The appointment aroused much interest at the time because it was the first occasion on which a woman had been appointed to a high administrative post in the Education Department, and women's organisations interested in the question of equality were incensed at the fact that Miss Flynn was forced to accept £650 a year instead of the £BOO which would have been paid to a man. The same situation with regard to salary applies, apparently, to her new position, the salary for which is £BSO to £9OO for a man and £6BO to £720 for a woman. It is understood that the question of salary is still being discussed and it may yet be that the Ministry will pay Miss Flynn the full salary for the very responsible work that she has been appointed to do. |
