TUKF GOSSIP «teminder Acceptances for the first Jay's programme of the Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-morrow. Track Work at Riccarton A heavy fall of rain in the early hours of the morning at Riccarton yesterday did not have any serious effect on the state of the tracks for galloping, although the going provided by the No. 7 grass, which was in general use, was slightly holding in places. Main interest in the mornings proceedings centred in horses booked to race at Trentham next week, and all got through useful tasks. On Course Proper Two Wellington Cup candidates, Vintage and Argentic, separately galloped under special arrangement on the outside of the course proper. The former ran seven furlongs in lmin SOsec, the first two in 13sec, two in 26sec, three in 39sec. He carried a light weight and was not ridden out, but his work was very satisfactory. He again showed signs of lameness when pulled up, but this worked off later. A rider has not yet been engaged for him at Trentham. A Strong: Candidate Argentic was given a similar task, taking lmin 29 2-ssec, the first two furlongs in 25 l-ssec, and three in 38 l-ssec. He also went pleasingly, and ■would probably have recorded faster time if he had had a mate. Although nothing definitely has yet been arranged, it is likely that Argentic will be ridden in the Wellington Cup by A. E. Ellis. On No. 7 Grass The Chokebore team for Trentham ■was let off with sprinting tasks. Paper Slipper ran three furlongs in 39 l-ssec, • Trench Fight in 38 3-ssec, Bun Fignt in 38sec, and Day Dress in 39 l-ssec, ■while Mulatto beat Haughty Winner m 38sec. 'ihermidor reeled off half a mile in 50 3-ssec. , „, . - Custos, assisted by Royal Chief, covered five furlongs in lmin ssec, the last half-mile in 52sec. The former has a slight cold, but is likely to go to Trentham in company with Cerne Abbas, whose work was confined to a circuit at a strong pace, with a sprint over the last three furlongs in 39sec. Royal Chief's next outing will be at Riccarton next month. Rebel Chief and Chidden were companions over six furlongs m lmin losec, the second three in 39 2-ssec. A Smart Gallop Concertpitch ran five furlongs in lmin 3sec, the last half-mile in 49 Convivial strode over six furlongs in lmin 19 3-ssec. She should race prominently in the high-weight events at Trentham. _, . Manetho easily accounted for Epic over five furlongs in lmin 5 2-ssec. Orange Bud finished in front of lunneller at the end of half a mile in 51sec. The former looks better now than earlier in the season, and another ■win should soon come her way. Tunneller is to take his place in the Wellington Cup. A rider has yet to be obtained for him. A New Arrival J Shaw has recommissioi.ed Sea Fox and' Atalanta Lass. He brought back with him from Auckland c. four-year-old gelding by Acre from Lady Lucille, dam of Gascille, a promising steeplechaser, who met his death at the last Wellington winter meeting. The new arrival is owned by Mr W. Hosking, owner of Greek Gold, and is ' a solid type of horse likely to do well both on the flat and over hurdles. Change of Stables Impersonator was sold this week by Sir Charles Clifford to a West Coast buyer, and his place in the Chokebore stable has been filled by Card Player, who has been on the easy list since the New Zealand Cup meeting. The National Winner Royal Limond was among those ■working on the sand at. Riccarton yesterday. He has been well done for during his holiday, and is carrying a good deal of surplus condition. Patient* Policy Greek Shepherd was given a little fast work yesterday. He is still on the big side, and his trainer does not " intend to hurry him, in the hope that he will overcome his leg troubles, tie is therefore not likely to race again until the winter. Not for Trentham The two-year-old Screamer has been suffering from a slight cold since returning from the North Island, and will not accompany Argentic to Trentham as previously intended. A Strong Pair C Emerson is gradually getting Tuixau into racing shape, and as she has not shown any signs of her old ailment, she is expected to earn distinction again later in the season. Her stable mate, Happy Night, has also done well of late, and sprinted a useful three furlongs yesterday. Moving: AlcngWild Chase was amongst those given a short sprint yesterday. He was not . nominated for the Wellington meeting. and is to have his next race in the Middle Park Plate ..at Riccarton next month.

three-year-old gelding by Shambles from Brayton. Both have oeen given plenty of time, and will require a good deal of racing before they will be seen" at their best. Small Representation

Wingatui stables have not accorded much patronage to the programme for the Wellington cup meeting. The nominations from the local stables are Guarantee, Gold Boa, Lochlaggan, High Glee, and Look Smart. Guarantee was distinctly sore when he pulled up after racing on the second day at Invercargill. A Profitable Deal

Sunnymorn, recently sold to go to India for a substantial figure, is a two-year-old colt by Siegfried from Enmity, by Cape Horn from Ennea, by Demosthenes. He was secured at the national yearling sales by Mr W. R. Kemball for 110 guineas, and has done all his racing in Australia. Sunnymorn won the Juvenile Stakes, of £SOO, at Caulfteld on Boxing Day. Dolomite's First

The imported sire Dolomite was credited with his first winner when Gilford was successful during the recent West Coast circuit. Gilford is from Corinthic, by Solferino from Greenstreet. by lan from Vicella (22). by Veles. Greenstreet was the dam of Greenaway, who unexpectedly won the Royal Stakes for Mr G. D. Greenwood. Dolomite was one of a consignment of English-bred thoroughbreds imported to Australia by Mr Russell Brendon in 1926. Jewel of Asia, Very Hot, and the stallion Woodend were among the same batch. Dolomite was imported from Australia by Mr H. Murphy, and won a number of races, including the Marlborough Cup and Canterbury Jockey Club Otaio Plate. He had started six times in England for a second, two thirds, and two fourths. TROTTING NOTES Reminder Nominations for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's summer meeting on January 23 will close on Thursday at 5 p.m. Timaru Train Arrangements For the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting on January 16, a special horse train will leave Christchurch at 6.40 a.m. and will lift horses at Addington. Sockburn, Templeton, Dunsaridel, Rakaia, and Ashburton. The train will run to the racecourse platform and will arrive at the course at 10.30 a.m. The return horse train for Christchurch will leave the racecourse platform at 5.45 p.m. Another Classic?

The vogue of classic races in the light-harness sport is growing. The donor of a trophy at the Winton Trotting Club's meeting is reported to have stated that if the club staged a tliree-year-old race next season he would give another trophy. It is understood that the club is considering the proposal and it is probable chat the club will place a classic event on its programme.

Northern Ranks Reduced When J. S. Shaw returned from the recent racing fixture ax Ellerslie he brought the trotting mare Golden Eagle with him. During the last two seasons the sister to Great Admnal has not realised expectations, but she was usually unfortunate in striking heavy tracks. With Golden Eagle. Great Admiral,- and Captain Bolt now in Canterbury and Meadow King penalised to a difficult mark, the ranks of Auckland's two-mile trotters have been seriously depleted. Another Trial

After a spell, during which he was blistered and fired, Donalda has been placed back in work by B. Jarden at Addington. This pacer showed great promise when he was first handled; but recurring lameness, the result of splints, has hindered his training throughout and it has been impossible to get him to his best, while he also developed somewhat wayward race manners. Following the recent treatment to his legs he is now much sounder than he has been for some time, "and he is hitting out very freely in his slow work, giving rise to the hope that he has completely-recovered and will stand a careful preparation for racing. At his best Donalda is a speedy pacer and quite capable of rising to the best classes. In the absence of lameness it is quite possible that he will show an improvement away from the barrier, which at present appears to be his only remaining weak point.

Improved Number Cloths It was noticeable on the second day of the recent Canterbury Park meeting that the club reverted to the old type of saddle cloth for the identification of the runners, and this move served to show the new discs adopted by the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club far superior to the old type in assisting the casual racegoer in following more closely the racing. However, it is understood that the spring clip attachments on the new discs which are affixed to the shafts of the sulky did not prove reliable. It is to be hoped that this defect does not warrant the reversion to the old type. Straps put in place of the clips would do away with any danger of the discs coming off during a race, and at the same time would prove as easy, if not easier to handle than the old. type of number cloth, which cannot be compared with the new nymben disc from the point of view of those who -follow the running of a race. Identification numbers something after the style of these discs have been used for some time at Timaru, Oamaru, and Wellington, and they have proved highly satisfactory.

AUSTRALIAN RACING

RANDWICK HANDICAPS (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.) SYDNEY, January 12. Despite his defeat in the A.J.C. Derby, the local handicapper evidently holds a high opinion of the ability of Gold Rod, who was awarded 9-0 in the Challenge Stakes, a handicap over six furlongs, to be decided at Randwick on January 30. This represents 81b over weight-for-age. Gold Rod was almost immediately withdrawn from the race. Other Challenge -Stakes weights include : King's Head The Marne 9 2 (top) 9 7 Fidelity ..8 1 Gav Blonde 9 3 Country Hadrian ..9 3 Party 7 12 Arachne ..92' Distinguished 7 2 The weights for the Anniversary Handicap, one mile and a half, include: — Contact (top) 9 3 Mananui -.'Jll Oro .. 9 2 Latharna ... 7 9 Upoko Ariki 8 4 Viceroy .. 7 6 Loud Wagner .. 6 12 Applause 8 3 Collstar .. 6 9 On Parade 8 2 t

Novice Hurdlers Bright Red (G. Ridgway) and Gwennie (D. Hall) were companions in a schooling task over four hurdles at Riccarton on Monday, both shaping exceptionally well. The former, who is an upstanding gelding, lives every indication of having a successful career as a jumper. Solid Breeding: F. D. Jones has received an addition to his team in a four-year-old filly by Philamor from Lady Swinton, by Clarenceux from Lady Minerva (dam of Minerval), by Martian from Lady Lilian. She cannot boast of much size, but shows a good deal of quality. Jones has two young horses in readiness to appear in his own colours in public for the first time. One is a three-year-old half-brother by Philamor to Shatter, and the other is a

TRENTHAM NOTES

IMPRESSIVE GALLOPS [THE PBBSS Special Service.] WELLINGTON. January 12. A good gallop by Flood Tide was the feature of the work nt Trentham this morning. He went over seven furlongs with Cuddle, and after running the first three in 37sec, Cuddle dropped the bit, and allowed Flood Tide to run home in front of her byfour or five lengths in lmin 29sec This habit is not unusual with Cuddle on the tracks, and little notice need be taken of it, but the gallop by Flood Tide was impressive and there appears little doubt that he is as good as his admirers claim him to be. Not having raced outside Auckland he is not thoroughly acquainted with the left-handed way of running, but it does not appear to trouble him in the least. His further track work during the week before the races will be watched with mterEssex Beaten

A similar effort to that of Cuddle, on the part of Essex, enabled Sunee to beat him soundly over seven furI longs, in the same time. Sunee has always been capable of excellent time on the tracks, and if he had only raced up to it, his winning record would be much better than it is. Not for Cup R W. Lewis states that Shy will not run' in the Wellington Cup_, as he is not in the proper condition for a mile and a half task, but he will take on something shorter later in the meeting. This morning he ran seven furlongs with Cricket, in lmin 31sec. Cricket looked like coming to winning form during the holidays, and while he went close to it, he was probably a trifle unlucky once or twice. Accomplice, who has been kept from rating since she ran at the spring meetings at Trentham in October is working along nicely again and has benefited by the patient policy adopted. She galloped well over five furlongs with Debham this morning. Cup Riders R. Marsh has been secured to ride Rona Bay in the Wellington Cup, and she continues to run along nicely in steady work. , Ponty was out doing a strong working gallop, in which he pulled hard. P. Atkins is spoken of as his rider if he starts in the Cup. On his form he is more at home over a shorter journey, though he appears very fit at Pr Wagner who returned from Sydney this week, is temporarily in charge of S. J. Reid, at Trentham. Owing to the wet summer experienced to date the tracks at Trentham are carrying a sole of grass unprecedented for this period of the year, and the usual watering of the which has been the only green part of the grounds in summer, has been and no doubt will be avoided. At present the going is perfect, and if no more rain falls it will be very fast for next week's racing.
