HOKITIKA SCHOOL JUBILEE

POSTPONEMENT UNTIL NEXT YEAR PRECAUTION AGAINST SPREAD OF POLIOMYELITIS Mr A. C. Armstrong presided at a meeting of all committees of the Hokitika State School jubilee. The chairman explained that he had instructed the secretary to write to the Health Officer at Christchurch (Dr. T Fletcher Telford) asking whether he considered it advisable to hold the jubilee as intended on February 6 7, and 8, because of the iniantile p! A a reply had been received, stating that it was inadvisable to _uggest that th* jubilee should be postponed . indefinitely. The committee was unanimously of the opinion that it should be deferred because of the large number of pupils from all parts of the Dominion who would be attending and the consequent danger of spreading the eP lt de was decided to hold the jubilee on February 5, 6. and 7 1938. _ Accounts amounting to £22 were passed for payment, and the chairman remarked that it was pleasing to state that there were sufficient funds m hand to meet all expenses to date and to leave a credit balance m the bank. The committee decided to hold a community sing at Easter and to arrange various functions during the year. Saturday Half-holiday The Saturday half-holiday was inaugurated in Hokitika on Saturday last, and was observed except by one shopkeeper. Before 5 p.m. ram began to fall and the weather became very stormy. Rain also fell on Sunday, end there was a further fresh in the Hokitika river. .. *,, ~ j . Hokitika Bowling Club The adjo-rned annual meeting of the Hokitika Bowling Club was held in the pavilion, Mr R. Collett presiding over a small attendance. The report and balance-sheet, the latter showing a liability of about £lO, was received and adopted. The officers of the previous year were re-elected. It was resolved to admit new players at a reduced fee for remainder of the season, and to send a rink to represent the club on the occasion of the visit of a Queensland touring team playing at Greymouth on February 3. Personal Notes Miss Isabel Aitken (Christchurch) is visiting Hokitika. and is the guest of Mr and Mrs T. Moore, Park street. Miss Phyllis Bond (Greymouth) is visiting Hokitika, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs Armstrong. Palmerston Miss F. Goudie, who has been spending her holidays with relatives in Hokitika, has left on her return to Dunedin. Obituary The death of Mrs Knight, wife of Mr Robert Knight, of Rimu, took place this week. Mrs Knight was born in Kanieri, and was 60 years of age. Besides her husband she leaves five sisters, Mrs McLeod, of Havelock North; Mrs H. Blythe, of Christchurch; Mrs Foster, of Ikamatua; Mrs Braithwaite, of Runanga; Mrs Crase, of Woodstock; and five brothers, Messrs George and Peter Webster, of Rimu; Alexander Webster, of Greymouth; James Webster, of Westport; and John Webster, of Kaikoura. • WESTPORT DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB The second shoot of the Westport Defence Rifle Club's third competition was won by W. Marshall (Westport) has returned from a visit to Christchurch and Wellington. ■ ' There was a large and representative attendance at the funeral at the Orawaiti cemetery of Mrs Mary Ann Maloney, of Denriiston.
