OBITUARY

MR EDWARD RHODESMOORHOUSE The death occurred in London on January 9, of Mr Edward RhodesMoorhouse, second son of the late baward Moorhouse, and a grandson of the late Hon. William Barnard Rhodes, M.L.C., of Wellington. Mr RhodesMoorhouse was educated at Harrow, and served in France during the Great War. He was a brother of the late William Barnard Rhodes RhodesMoorhouse, who was the first airman to gain the Victoria Cross during the GrrGElt Well" Mr Rhodes-Moorhouse visited New Zealand in 1915, for a few months, and was a barrister at law in London. ■ He married twice, but- had no children. His sisters are Mrs Alexis ffrench, of London, and Mrs Pekala, of Finland. Mr Rhodes-Moorhouse was about years old, and was ill with pneumonia for a short period before his death. The funeral was held at the private family burial ground at Parnha.m, Dorset, where he was born. MR C. H. FRANKS News was recently received of the death in Sydney of Mr Charles Henry Franks, barrister and solicitor, formerly of Christchurch. He was educated at Christ's College,, and after being engaged for some years in a commercial office he entered the service of ' Messrs Acton-Adams and Kippenberger, barristers and solicitors, and qualified for the legal profession. He was a partner for many years of Mr Philip Kippenberger, on whose death he took into partnership Mr W. J. Hunter. . ... Mr Franks was well known in his profession as a skilled conveyancer and adviser. His whole attention was given to the conduct of his profession and he took little part in public life. He played tennis and golf, and was for many years a member of the New Brighton Tennis Club. After his retirement he travelled extensively, in Europe and America, and for some yaars- before his death he resided in Sydney. He is survived by his widow and one son,.Mr Kynaston Franks, who is a well-known operatic singer. MAJOR F.,S. C. RICHARDSON \ [THB PRESS Special Service! DUNEDIN, January 12.. The death occurred in Dunedin yesterday of a widely-travelled - and experienced former Imperial Army Officer, Major Frederick Stephen Chadwick Richardson, 0.8. E. Born at Marske, in Yorkshire, in May, 1854, he chose a military career, joining the Royal Horse Artillery when he was 18 years of age. He served in the Afghan War and was with iord Roberts at Kabul, and in Khandahar in 1879. He next saw active service in the South African War. For two or three years he was in retirement; but he returned to take charge of the cavalry records at Woolwich. When the war broke out, the records became an important and much greater responsibility, and he went to York to keep them. He moved with the records to Canterbury in 1919, and until 1926, when he came to New Zealand, he lived outside Canterbury, spending his time gardening.. On coming to New Zealand he took up residence at Highcliff, on the Otago Peninsula. Two sons—Hector (18th Hussars), and Frank (3rd Hussars)— were killed in France, and the two remaining sons are both in Canada. Major Richardson's widow and three daughters all reside in Dunedin.

SIR EVERARD UPTON

(UNITED' PBESB ASSOCIATION—COPYBIGHT.) NAIROBI, January 11.,, The death has occurred of Sir Thomas Everard Tichborne Upton, at the age of 65. Sir Everard, who was the son of the late Mr Thomas .Everard Upton, J.P., of Ashburton,-New Zealand, was educated at Christ's College, Christchurch, and was admitted as a solicitor of the High Court, England, in 1897. He was admitted as a member of the High Court of Bengal in 1902. In 1927 he became Solicitor to the Government of India, and he was a member of the Council of State in India in 1928 and 1930. He retired in 1932. Sir Everard was a director of several companies. MR HOWARD KNAPP (united pekss association—copxbight.) (Received January 12, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 11.
