January 1L A new passenger liner of between 20,000 tons and 22,000 tons will enter the England to New” Zealand trade in 1938, according to Mr J. Macmillan, managing director of the Shaw* Savill and Albion Company, Ltd., and the Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line, Ltd., London, who arrived from Sydney by the Awatea. When in Sydney recently, Mr Macmillan announced that the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line and the Blue Funnel Line, would each build a new liner for their joint service .to Australia, via South Africa and he said to-day that his company’s vessel would also enter the New Zealand trade. It was expected that the keels of the two vessels would be laid down shortly. “Shipbuilding costs are rising considerably, and the liner we plan will cost many thousands of pounds more than I anticipated,” Mr Macmillan said. The liner would incorporate the most modem shipbuilding principles, and would accommodate between 500 and 600 passengers in one class. He would not say what speed the liner was being designed for. but he said it would be very fast. Mr Macmillan will make a business tour of New Zealand.
