OFFICIAL FORECASTS [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, January 11. The Dominion Observatory’s weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with ♦he 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: Strong north-westerly winds to gales at first, but a change to southerlies probable before Tuesday morning. Weather becoming cloudy and showery, with colder temperatures. Seas moderate, but rising. The following is the Dominion forecast:— #-• Weather changeable and squally, \ ritb scattered rains in most districts, and becoming colder; improving soon, however, on the West Coast of the South Island, and'gradually elsewhere. The last of a series of rather deep westerly depressions is crossing the Dominion to-day. An anti-cyclone of moderate intensity is situated over the western Tasman Sea. Winds—Moderate to strong generelly, and of gale force at places south of New Plymouth and Napier; southwesterly prevailing in the far north end south, and westerly elsewhere, but south-westerlies or southerlies extending over most of the Dominion by tomorrow morning. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rough on the West Coast and about Cook Strait and Foveaux Strait; elsewhere moderate, but later rising south of East Cape. Eastern Tasman —Southwesterly to southerly winds; moderate In the northern portion with moderate seas; strong to gale force, with rough seas, in the central and southern portions; but later conditions moderating. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER The strong north-west winds of the last two days continued in Christchurch yesterday, although m the evening it changed round to the southwest, and some light showers, almost heat showers, fell. During the late evening more rain fell and the weather became colder. The maximum temperature during the day was 67,5 degrees. At 1 o’clock this morning steady rata was falling. The wind was from the south-west. The temperature was 46 degrees. IN OTHER PLACES Auckland—Yesterday the weather vims fine and sunny. There was a light southerly wind, with warm temperatures. The sky tvas clear, and the barometer was steady at 29.80 , inches. , The weather was line and sunny yesterday,: but clouds gathered and rain threatened in the late, afternoon. A north-westerly gale blew throughout the day, the maximum gust being one'of 64 miles an hour at 1.50 ftm. The minimum temperature during Sunday night was 53.2 degrees; the maximum yesterday 62.3 degrees. ‘-Dunedin—The weather yesterday Sorplng: was fine, hut rain started to fall ' shortly after midday, and if was not until the early*'evening that the i sky cleared. The barometer dropped to 29.25 in at noon, but rose again to 29,35 in in the evening. The maximum temperature was 57 degrees.
