Although England was without 1 fdur test bowlers, the attack was j sufficiently strong to dismiss Tas- { mania for 104 in the first innings on a slow batting wicket. ■ Fames and Copson sowed the seed < of the collapse, which became a rout ; when Sims took four for two to end the innings in 98 minutes. The Englishmen made a bad start when Fishlock, who opened with i Fagg. was given out leg-before after the ball had hit his bat. Fagg and Worthington then put on 102 in a' ■ second wicket stand, but three ; Wickets fell for only nine runs, and four were down for 118. Wyatt, making his first appearance sihce his -wrist was injured, in the third match of the tour, played only three balls and.was then given out. He was caught by the bowler after playing the ball hard. An attractive partnership between Ames and Hardstaff produced 115 runs in 69 minutes, Hardstaff hitting , two sixes in a brilliant innings of 55. Towards the end of the day , the Englishmen" took the bowling lightly, Robins being at the crease only 10 minutes for a breezy 24. England's spirited batting had produced 283 runs in 176 minutes-at stumps.
