NORTH CANTERBURY

♦ —~ RANGIORA RIFLE CLUB COMPETITION MATCH RESULTS The Rangiora Defence Rifle Club held a club competition on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were seven shots at each of three ranges, 300 yards, 500 yards, and 600 yards. Results were as follows:

Bowling: Tourney A doubles tournament was played by members of the Rangiora Bowling Club on Saturday afternoon. Winning three rounds each, C. Rands and C. I. Jennings (skip) defeated W. E. Barton and G. R. Symonds (skip) in the final. Personal Miss V. Wheeler, who will be married this week, was presented with a crystal water jug by her fellow employees when she left the employ of Johnston's, Ltd.. Rangiora, on Saturday. The presentation was made by the manager, Mr D. R. Blake. t Infant'.le Paralysis Precautions Approval of the precautions taken by Rangiora people against infantile paralysis was expressed by the inspector of health for the district (Mr O. D. Cruickshank) to a representative of "The Press" on Saturday. "They are doing their best to keep infantile paralysis from coming here," he said. 'VT notice that very few children are attending picture shows and that they are avoiding beaches and other crowded resorts. These are the factors that count." Improvement In Weather Rangiora people in large numbers left the town for Waikuku and other beaches and for the Ashley river yesterday. A boisterous north-west wind did not mar a brilliantly fine day, and the picnickers enjoyed .the best weather the district has had for some time. Demand for Farm Labour A decreased demand for men to fill permanent positions on farms is noticeable in the Rangiora district. With the coming of fine weather, however, it is thought probable that positions for skilled workers will become vacant in proportion to the demand for harvesters. Teamsters and others will be attracted by the high rates of pay offered to men on the harvest field, and will leave their employment, creating vacancies to be filled by labourers at present unemployed. NEW SPORTS GROUNDS AT AMBERLEY OPENING BY RT. HON. G. W. FORBES Many people attended the opening of the bowling green and croquet lawn in the Amberley Domain on Saturday. Mr S. Frew, the president, thanked all who had helped to make the new grounds possible, and mentioned specially Mr F. T. Pool, the secretary, and Mr D. H. Day, the contractor. Mr E. Chamberlain spoke on behalf of the the Domain Board and Mr Kennedy on behalf of the Ghristchurch Bowling Centre. The Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, M.P. for the district, declared the ground open. Mrs JForbes threw the first kitty and Mr Forbes bowled the first bowl. Visiters were present from the Linwood, Rangiora, Rotherham, Rakaia, United, Cheviot,. Waipara, Kaiapoi, Sydenham, and Edgeware Clubs. \ Presentation Members of the Amberley Presbyterian Church gathered at the residence of Miss J. McNaught to express appreciation of her work for the church. The Rev. R. Taylor, on behalf of the congregation, presented Miss McNaught with a croquet mallet, suitably inscribed, and a handbag. Personal The Rev. H. J.'W. Knights and Mrs Knights and daughters (Kakaia) are spending the holidays at their bach at Amberley beach. SHEFFIELD PERSONAL NOTES Mr and Mrs W. N.
