TURF GOSSIP Attractive Breeding Greenwich, winner of the Criterion Handicap at Ellerslie last week, is by Chief Ruler, whose two-year olds are having a record season, from Summer Time by Grandcourt from imported Very Hot (22), by Grosvenor from Tea Pot by Pericles, tracing to Parma, grand-dam of St. Frusquin and ancestress of the highly successful brood mare Eulogy. This branch of the No. 22 family has been well represented in New Zealand. One member of it was Kilcheran, imported by Mr I. G. Duncan, and sire of Kilwinning. Kilrain, and Kilindmi. Another was San Francisco, who was a brother to St. Frusquin, and a very successful sire, the best of his progeny perhaps being Elevation and Downfall. - ; Eulogy has been one of the greatest brood mares imported in recent years, but the best performer the branch of the family has produced since St. Frusquin was the Derby winner Captain Cuttle, sire of imported Captain Bunsby. A close relative of Captain Cuttle is Excitement, now at the stud in Australia, and sire of the two-year-old Disturbed. Grosvenor. sire of Very Hot, is a son of Cicero and Scep„tre, and is sire of Rosenor and the imported mare Jewel of Asia, dam of Farmer and Sir’John. .Winning Sires at Ellerslie Interesting features of the winning sires’ list for the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting were the success of Psychology through his daughter Cuddle, the large number of winners, especially two-year-olds, sired by Chief Ruler, and the fact that the only time the progeny of Hunting Song got into the money was on New Year’s Day, when the conditions underfoot were exactly to their liking. On this occasion Hunting Song sired three winners, and an investment on each of his prqgeny who started throughout the day would have shown a substantial profit. The two leading sires, Psychology and Chief Ruler, are dead. The following are the sires of winners of £3OO or over, with their representatives, who earned either win or place money:—Psychology (Cuddle, Small Boy), £1870; Chief Ruler (Royal Chief, Francis Drake, Rulette, Greenwich, 'Aiwai, Galilee, Chief Ranger), £1770; Siegfried (Essex, Brunhilde), £1220; Raceful (King Rey, Respectful), £1100; Little England (Adalene, Modern Maid), £870," Tidal (Flood Tide, King Neptune), £750; Hunting Song (Rollicker, Pakanui, Pennycomequick), £7so;‘Acre (Scotland, Lornacre, High Quality, Johnny Walls), £735; Gainscourt (Oratory, Armacourt, Solaria), £625; Silverado (Argentic), £420; • Nigger Minstrel (The Crooner, Quadroon), £380; LucullUs (Greek Gold), £370; Valkyrlan (Shy, Val Watch), £350; Posterity (Legatee. Relative), £350; Lord Quex (Sergia, Haut Monde, Round Up), £340; Musketoon (Sweet Rose), £320; Illumination (Kanapa, Loombihation), £305; and Leighton (Star Artist), £3OO. Is It Harmful?

dicap, will be worth £4OO, the Craven Plate £3OO, the Middle Park Plate £3OO, while the Lyttelton Plate, for two-year-olds, the Halswell Hack Handicap, and the Post Handicap will each be worth £2OO. The rest of the card is made up of the Hornby Brush Hurdle Race and the Trial Stakes, each of £175. The latter event is for horses that have never won a race worth £SO to the winner. Nominations for these races and a first forfeit for the Middle Park Plate will be due on January. 22. Perfect Lady is Fast Perfect Lady, winner of the Juvenile Handicap' at Hastings on New Year’s Day, had only twice previously been raced, at Gisborne in November. She was soon in front from Mohua and Sardius, and she held on to beat Mohua by a short head. As she was carrying the same weight as the speedy Mohua, it was a useful performance. This filly is a three-year-old bay daughter of Defoe from the Sarto—Scarab mare Bertha, who did not race herself, but is a half-sister to Wilmoreana, a winner of hurdle events, and to Arab Song (dam of Tidal Song). It is one of the branches from the famous Juliet family. Perfect Lady is being raced by Mr N. E. F. Loisel, of Gisborne, where she is trained by J. Lorigan.

Big Offers Refused Big money can be obtained in America for good horses, but, as is the case elsewhere, some American owners are not anxious to part with the good ones. An offer of £IO,OOO for Myrtlewood, America’s best sprinting mare, was refused, and later another of £BOOO, from a would-be buyer, who wished to run her in the valuable Santa Anita Handicap. Myrtlewood, who won seven of the nine races in which she ran this year, goes to the stud next season. Huge Profits According to the “Blood Horse,” the Santa Anita (Los Angeles) track represented a £280,000 investment when it opened on Christmas Day, 1934. The following summer its stockholders got £IOO,OOO of their capital back, and last summer another £175,000. Narragansett Park at Providence (R. 1.) paid for itself the season it was opened, and last year its gross return from pari-mutuel betting alone, was £430,000. The year's turnover was £5,958,000. Patience Rewarded The two successes gained by the Hunting Song—Cymene gelding Cyclonic on the West Coast circuit were well received in racing circles. Cyclonic was purchased some two years ago by A. McAulay from J. H, Jeflerd, but was never properly sound, and failed to win a race for his new owner. After a long (spell, the gelding was taken up by his present owner-trainer, E. McLennan, who displayed marked patience with him, and had to endure several reverses before Cyclonic won his first race since coming south at Hokitika last week. There has never been any doubt regarding Cyclonic’s ability, and in this respect he was considered as a young horse to be up to the standard of his halfbrother Cylinder, by Limond, winner of the'l93o New Zealand Derby, but it has been, a most trying proposition to keep him sound enough to be able to show his best in public, and in consequence, his activities have been very limited. Cyclonic is racing at Reefton this week, and should earn some more stake money for McLennan. Bright Prospects Although there was showery weather in West Coast districts yesterday, the indications last night were for a fine day at Reefton to-day. The track will be holding, but not, heavy.:

TROTTING NOTES Reminders Nominations for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close' on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close on Tuesday at 9 p.m. Improving Kibo has raced well in her last few starts, and her prospects of returning to the winning list look bright. For the greater part of the time she has been under G. McKendry she has shown decided. signs of unsoundness, but careful attention by her trainer has allowed her to stand up to work, and at the moment she appears more sound than has been the case since she first came to Canterbury. Growing Team Some months ago V. Alborn intended to retire from the light-harness sport, but he gave, up the idea, and at the moment he is working a useful team of trotters and pacers, including Midshipmaid, Highrate, War Path, and Linklight. His team has been further increased by the inclusion of two novice performers by Rey de Oro and Judge Hancock, a pacer and a trotter respectively. Waipahi Impresses Two. wins during the Gore and Winton meetings served to bring Waipahi into the limelight as an outstanding novice, and the opinion -has been expressed that he is the most promising pacer produced in Southland for many years past. At Winton, Waipahi scored over a mile and a quarter in 2min 43 4-ssec, shattering all previous records for the distance, which stood at 2min 45sec for the cup horses in harness in the south. Although he is not altogether reliable in harness, he is improving' in this respect with, experience, and, by Prince Pointer, he appears to have the right credentials to make a class performer.

An attempt to settle for himself the question whether early two-year-old racing is harmful or otherwise is to be made by an American studmaster, Mr Warren Wright. Writing in the “Thoroughbred Record,” “Roamer” says: “It is understood that Mr Wright is determined to make a radical experiment next year—this is nothing less than to refrain from racing five, of his most choicely bred two-year-olds, in an effort tc determine whether this policy will bear fruit in 1938. “It is earnestly to be hoped that the experiment succeeds beyond his wildest anticipations—then he will have lots of imitators, and we shall be vouchsafed some sort of a line as to whether two-year-old racing in the main Is injurious.” It is not intended that the youngsters should remain in complete idleness in the paddocks as two-year-olds. They will be put through their paces in the usual manner, in private—in effect, they will be trained but not raced. Mr Wright has decided upon this experiment in face of the fact that Privileged, a Sir Galahad 111. colt, who carries his colours, is one of America’s crack juveniles this year. Privileged has won five races and £2897 in stakes, but he was unfortunate in losing the Pimlico Futurity, worth £5060 to the winner last month. Starting favourite, he beat Matey (Man o’ War—Tavy) by a nose, but, to the surprise of most backers, his rider was adjudged guilty of interferencee,;-and Privileged was. disqualified for the race.

Rowe Handicap Winner Great Admiral, who won the Rowe Memorial Handicap two years in succession, scored in his first public appearance two years ago at Te Aroha, when he made a good impression by going 3min 29sec from the limit of a maiden event. He was beaten in his next start, the only tinie he has been out of a place in a trotting race, and completed the season with three more wins.. His record last season was'two firsts and a second, and he did not race again until last week. He was twice unplaced when raced against pacers. By Nelson Bingen from Great Eyre, Great Admiral is a very solid trotter who should give his new owner, Mr G. J. Barton, an early return. Auckland Stake-winners Through the success of Red Shadow, who won, the Champion the. President’s Handicaps, and was third in the cup, J. Bryce, with £B7O, was the largest winning owner at the Auckland trotting meeting, Mrs B, C. Lincoln secured £660 and a gold cup to the value of £SO as the result of King’s Warrior’s victory in the Auckland cup and third in the President’s Handicap. Bonny Azure’s first and second gave S. G. Hedley £260, and Meadow King’s first and second netted C. Moran £230. Attempt on Mile Record While at Epsom for the, Auckland Trotting . Club’s summer meeting, J. Bryce is-reported to have stated that when he gets Red Shadow right back to his best.he will send that, horse against time over a mile, and that, conditions in his favour, he expects Red Shadow to leave a flying mile behind in: two minutes. Red Shadow has always been regarded as one of bur most brilliant pacers, but his ability to be: the first horse in this country to take a two-minute record will be doubted. Indianapolis, who has proved himself a better pacer than the Travis Axworthy horse, both as a sprinter and a stayer, has failed in his .two attempts_to j?eac&. the list_of

Not Retiring Yet Steve Donoghue, the famous English rider, has contradicted the rumour that he was retiring from riding forthwith, and has announced that he will apply for a license again. NOTES ON THE RACING [THE PRESS Special Service.] GREYMOUTH, January 7. In spite of wretched weather, which greatly affected the attendance, the Greymouth Trotting Club had a successful meeting. There were no form upsets, with the exception that the locally-owned Little Gordon paid a very big dividend for a win in the Railway Handicap. Mystery Yet’s Greymouth Cup victory was, a triumph. From 72 yards behind the Rey de Orb gelding gradually made up the leeway to overwhelm the field for speed over the last quarter of a mile. Staying oh brilliantly, he beat Ginger Jack, who was trotting badly.. After a good effort -ini' the heavy going, Red Flyer was a ©"editable third. The canteen of cutlery which accompanied the stake of the Greymouth Trotting Club Handicap was presented by Mr James O’Brien, M.P., to Mr J. Geddes, owner of Mystery Yet. Royal Grattan Makes Amends Royal Grattan atoned for his previous failures in the Westland Handicap, winning handily from the hackmarkers. Savoldi, Truman, Wee Truman, Tarn, and Lucky Find were the early leaders, and passing the stands Wee Truman led Tarn, Playwright, Lucky Find, Royal Grattan, and Vinco, Savoldi improved his position running along the back. At the straight entrance Tarn broke, dropping back. On the final circuit Savoldi; raced •to the front from Royal Grattan, Playwright, Travis Pringle, Vinco. Wee Truman, and Truman. Savoldi and Royal Grattan drew away from, the field in the last two furlongs, leading into the straight clear of Vinco, Truman, and Playwright. The' firstnamed pair fought out a great finish, Savoldi being heralded as thfe winner, but Royal Grattan finished best, and was given the verdict by half a length, with the *fast-finishing Truman three lengths away, and Vinco close

twO-minute performers, and a comparison between the two horses would leave Red Shadow with small prospect of bettering the present mile record 1 under any conditions. Women Owners to the Fore Eleven women owners participated in the prize-money at the Auckland trotting meeting, securing £1525. Mrs B. C, Lincoln, owner of. King’s Warrior, who won £660, also took a £SO gold cup. Mrs -G. M,. .Revell, with Parisienne, won - £220, and Mrs R. M. O’Donnell, a newcomer to the ranks, took £l5O with Musketeer. Frank Best’s three seconds , gave Mrs B. Young £l2O, and Mrs T. Brady got £l4O when True Trust scored. Others to secure a share were Mrs F. E. Piper £6O. Mrs E. E. Rayner £4O, Mrs E. E. Berryman £25, Mrs M. Condon £25, Mrs F, Guerin £2O, and Mrs L. L, Williamson £2O, In the December and Park Handicaps all three placed horses had women owners,: ... . ;...

up. Then came Black Marble, Loyal Direct, and Playwright. Harvest Note Wins Taking charge over the early stages. Harvest Note trotted an honest race' throughout to win the Dunollie Handicap from Lord Ernleigh, who also trotted solidly in the muddy going. Beethoven, County Down, Fluke, and Guy Forrest failed to trot, evenly. Harvest Note and Lord Ernleigh early established a . big lead from County Down and Beethoven, with Gay Crusader, from the back mark, and Dollar Maid,- trotting solidly, fast making up ground. Dollar Maid and Gay Crusader failed to make any impression ,on the leaders, and Harvest Note won easing up by two . lengths from Lord Ernleigh, with Dollar Maid 10 lengths back, clear of Gay Crusader, who slowed up over the final quarter. Fluke, Beethoven, and County Down were next to finish. ; ■ A Pointless Victory . Labourman scored a pointless victory. in the President’s Handicap; leading throughout. Elite Rey was the only runner which , did not move off. Labourman, Floodlight, and Erin's Beauty early put a break on the field, Epilogue, Little Derby, Awa Dillon, and Trinidad being next in line. The order was unchanged in the final circuit, and into the straight Labourman led Floodlight, Little Derby, and Erin’s Beauty. Labourman drew away to win pulling up by six lengths from Floodlight, with Little Derby two lengths back. Erin’s Beauty, who faded out, was fourth, followed by Buddy, Trinidad, arid Epilogue. A Good Stayer Mystery Yet gave a brilliant exhibition of his staying qualifications in the Greymouth Trotting Club Handicap, gradually reducing a big, gap to the leaders to wear down Ginger Jack in the run to the post, When he appeared to be an easy winner. Irish Peach, Doris Derby, and Brigadier failed to go away evenly. Moana' Tama was the early pacemaker from Monty Chimes, Fortex. and Red Flyer. After a mile, Moana Tama led Fortex, Ginger. Jack, Monty Chimes, Red Flyer, Cantata, and, Starvale, with Mystery Yet still well in the ; rear. Ginger Jack took charge after" nine furlongs, and with, three-quarters of the journey traversed led Fortex, Red Flyer, Monty Chimes, Mystery Yet, and Brigadier. The order was unchanged along the back and into the straight Ginger Jack led Red Flyer, Mystery Yet, and Monty Chimes. Ginger Jack drew out at the straight entrance, but Mystery Yet finished brilliantly on’ the outside, gradually wearing the leader down to win comfortably by a length from Ginger Jack, with Red Flyer three lengths away. Then - came Monty Chimes, Brigadier, and a big gap to Cantata, Fortex. and Starvale. A Good Finish There was a slashing finish to the Victoria Park Handicap, Repeal ranging past the leaders to win brilliantly. Glencree was the. pacemaker from Colonel Bogey, Marie Louise, Lady Ann, Reylena, Loretta, - and Buddy. Buddy and Marie Louise drifted after half a mile, where Glencree led Colonel Bogey, Reylena, Loretta, Repeal, and Trada. Reylena secured a run on the rails and was first into the straight from Glencree, Loretta, Repeal, and Trada. Reylena stopped badly in the heavy goirig on the rails, and Loretta. took charge from Glencree and appeared to have the race won when Repeal and Trada flashed up on the outside. Repeal-winning by a length- from the ’ moderately-sup-ported Trada, with Loretta half a length away and’ Glencree close up fourth. Then came Colonel Bogey, Reylena, Lady Ann, and Royal Travis. Won in Last Few Strides The County. Handicap produced a thrilling finish, Walter Wrack just beating the outsider of the field in the last few strides. Tasman-Flight trotted faultlessly throughout at the head of the field, his nearest attendants for the first 10 furlongs being Gay Crusader, Lord Ernleigh, Violet Wrack, Walter Wrack, and Debutante. The lastnamed pair forged ahead in the last two furlongs, following Tasman Flight into the straight. Walter Wrack gradually forged past the leader and won by a neck, with Debutante two lengths away. ; Lord Ernleigh was fourth, then Violet Wrack. . - Little Gordon’s Brilliance With a sustained dash over the last two furlongs in the Railway Handicap, Little Gordon convincingly outsprinted the field in an exciting finish, and paid a very rich dividend on the win machine. Big Nelson and Olive King were slow to move off. Major Guy led away from Lynley de. Oro. Trinidad, True Reflection. Irish Aggie, Little Gordon, Olive King, and Happi. Lynley de Oro broke at the bend entering the straight. The order was unchanged! in the ; final circuit, except that 'True Reflection had run up to third position. Littlfe Gordon began to catch his- field with about a furlong and a, half to go, and continued to run | from" well back on the outside. Irish Aggie was first into the straight from Major Guy, Trinidad, True Reflection, and Starvale. Irish Aggie was acclaimed the winner. but Little Gordon. Trinidad, and True, Reflection finished- full of running. Little Gordon had a clear cut win by a length from >Trinidad. with True Reflection half a, length away. Then came Irish Aggie, Major Guy, and Happi. Red Flyer Outclasses Field "’Red. Flyer outclassed the field in the Paparba Handicap. He trailed the leading division for.. the first; six; furlongs, arid then took: charge to win without effort by a length from Monty Chimes, with the pacemaker; Celebrity, half a length away, and Repeal close up fourth, with. Royal Travis. Irish Peach, and .Cantata next to finish; Buddy * was slow away, and Irish Peach swerved across the track and severely hampered Repeal, whose effort after losing considerable ground was an, excellent one.
