BOWLS

N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY DIFFICULT PLAY IN NORTH-WEST GALE SIXTEEN REMAIN IN PAIRS; ELEVEN IN SINGLES (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, January 7. Play reached an advanced stage today in" the singles and pairs at the New Zealand championship bowling tournament. At the close of play, 16 remained in the pairs and eleven in the singles, one of the singles players having two lives. The events will not be concluded until next week, when the players become free from the rinks matches, which will commence this morning. There were large numbers of spectators on the greens to see the play. A north-west gale was blowing when play started, and although it dropped considerably. during the day gusts were always liable to affect the play. Many bowls went astray even on sheltered rinks.' During the morning a rain squall swept most of the greens, but the sun came ( out later and the afternoon was brilliant. The following players remain in the singles;— Best (two lives); and Dickinson, Spearman, Thomas, Mingins, Evans, Bennett, Engebretsen, Bremner, Hadwin, and Brackenridge (one life). • • The most interesting game in the pairs was between Harley and Bremner and Maslin and Squire. In 1933 these pairs met in the final, and Squire won. In 1932 at Auckland Bremner and Hardley won the event. Bremner is skip in the current tournament, but previously he was lead. At the beginning of the game, it appeared that Bremner would walk away from Squire. He had 10 on the board when the fifth head was being played, and Squire had not scored at all. However, Squire gradually reduced the lead and by the nineteenth was one down, but he lost the remaining heads and victory went to Bremner, 1 Scott and Lloyd beat Wellings and McWhannell in a game that was in doubt right to the end. Lloyd held the shot, and placed his last bowl so’short that it seemed almost too short to be a block. McWhannell’s drive hit it, however. The final draw of the. players remaining in the pairs has been made as follows, the games to be held when the players become available from the rinks:—Lomas v. Cometti, Tilley v. Trueman, Manning v. Henderson, Bremner v, Hazlewood, Vile v. Livingstone, McGonagle v. Wicks, Lloyd v. Naylor, Lawry v. Needham. Results:— SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP TWO-LIFERS Best (Dunedin) 20, Evans (Hamilton) 16.
