KAIKOURA The monthly meeting of the Kaikoura branch of the Women’s Institute was held in the Presbyterian schoolroom, Mrs N. C. Comer presiding over a moderate attendance. The competition for the roll call was woft by. Mrs E. H. Morris and Mrs N. C. Comer.’ Other competitions resulted as follows: —Best bloom, Miss Monica Mackld and'Mrs,E, H. Morris (equal) 1, Mrs W.' Wilson 3. Sewing: Mrs W. Wilson 1, Mrs J. J. Gibson 2. Cooking: Mrs H. A, Fairweather 1, Mrs N. C. Comer 2. Word building; Mrs W. A. Stuart. Goods sold for disabled soldiers amounted to £4 10s 6d. The hostesses for the afternoon tea were Mesdames Stubbersfield, Storer, A. Turner, Morris, and Miss M. Turner. LE DON’S BAY Mrs Thelning (president) presided at the January meeting of the Le Eon’s Bay Women’s Institute. Miss M. Crotty judged the competitions and made the following awards;— Bowl of geraniums: Mrs Truman and Miss G. Leonardo (equal) 1, Mrs H. Barker 2, Mrs J. Elliott 3. Nut loaf; Mrs Lodge 1, Miss G. Leonardo 2, Mrs O’Connell and Miss E. Thelning (equal) 3. Mrs Dalglish, Mrs Truman, and Miss Dalglish were in charge of the social half-hour, and songs, recitations, and competitions were enjoyed. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs H. Barker and Miss J. Crotty.

ENGAGEMENT NOTICE The engagement is announced of Irene Carlton, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs M. J. R. Vial, of Beckenham, Christchurch, to Victor Gerald, elder son of Mr and Mrs H. Spiller, of Spreydon, Christchurch., GIFT PARTY Misses M. Steere and R. Dulieu were hostesses at an enjoyable variety afternoon party, held at Ballantynes, in honour of Miss Edna Macartney, whose marriage will take place this month. A competition was won by Mrs J. Johnston. Those present included Mesdames Macartney, H. Dulieu. K. Dulieu, P. Smith, J. Johnston, R. Tobeck, I. Perryman, R. Carter, K. Beumelberg, C. Barnett, J. Michael, Misses E. Macartney, M. Tobeck, A. Welsh, M. Ryan, and A. Tobeck.
