SERIOUS CHARGES
* TWO MEN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL [THE FBESS Spec si Service.] WESTPORT. January 7. On a charge of attempting to have unlawful carnal knowledge at Westport, on December 31, of a girl aged 12 years and nine months, William Shepherd, of Runanga. aged 21 years, who appeared on remand before Messrs E. R. Fox and A- Taylor, J.’sP., in the Magistrate’s Court at Westport to-day, and who pleaded not guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court at Westport for trial. James Richard Galway, aged 24 years, an employee of a travelling showman, was charged with having had unlawful carnal knowledge of the same girl at Westport on December 26, and with attempting to have carnal knowledge of a girl aged 14 years and two months on the same date. Galway, too. pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Westport for trial. Both accused were represented by Mr H. Lovell, and Police-Sergeant C. J. King conducted the prosecution.
