<* JUNIOR TENNIS COMPETITION FINAL POSITIONS OF TEAMS There is an unusually regular order of precedence in the final positions of teams in the junior grade of the North Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Associa-tion's competitions for 1936-37. Seven teams competed, the winner gained seven points, and there was only one point separating each of the others. Details are as follows: —
New Year Holidays There will be no special holiday sports attractions in Rangiora during the New Year period. Shops will observe the weekly late night to-morrow and will then close until next Monday. A watchnight service will be held by the Rangiora Salvation Army on New Year's Eve and at 7.15 a.m. on New Year's Day there will be Holy Communion at St. John's Anglican Church. No competition tennis matches will take place on Saturday, but cricket fixtures will be played. Holiday programmes have been arranged at the Regent Theatre. Heavy Rainfall About an inch and a half of rain fell in Rangiora on Monday. The rain began on Sunday night and continued intermittently for 24 hours, the weather clearing gradually yesterday. Farmers are looking for settled conditions for haymaking and the cutting of early crops, the frequent showers in recent weeks having delayed their work. Personal Mr G. M. Morgan, Rangiora, is visiting Westland. Oddfellows' Lodge Approval was given to the payment of four maternity allowances and a claim for a funeral allowance was received at a meeting of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge, M.U.J.0.0.F., on Monday evening. The N.G., Bro. J. W. Heward, presided. Repent Theatre There will be a midnight matinee tomorrow night at the Regent Theatre, Rangiora, commencing at 9.45, and concluding with "Auld Lang Syne" at 12 o'clock. The comedy, "Brewster's Millions." will be presented, with Jack Buchanan in the leading role. Paper hats, streamers, and novelties will be given to the patrons. The complete programme will be repeated on Friday (New Year's Day), afternoon and evening. Seats may be booked at Watson's, telephone 202. AKAROA REGATTA QLUB'S DANCE ARRANGEMENTS COMPLETED FOR NEW YEAR'S NIGHT The Commodore, Mr F. R. E. Davis, presided at a meeting of the Akaroa Regatta Club. Arrangements were made for the regatta club's dance on New Year's Night. Messrs F. L. Kearney and L. J. Vangioni were appointed doorkeepers, and Messrs J. E. Armstrong, A. G. Shuttleworth, and A. F. Le Lievre, masters of ceremonies. , „ , It was decided to write a letter oi thanks to the Akaroa Boating Club thanking members for placing their hall at the club's disposal on New Year's night, and for the championship regatta on February 27. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Messrs D. J. Gunn and L. C. Byers for collecting a sum of over £lO for the New Year's Day regatta. The sum was given to the Canterbury Rowing Association for the boat freight costs to Boating Club's Dance The members of the Akaroa Boating Club held a very successful dance in their social hall, when there was a large attendance. Dance music was played by the Revellers' Band. REGATTA AT KAIKOURA RIFLE CLUB'S SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE The Kaikoura Miniature Rifle Club held a very successful regatta at the wharf, there being a very large attendance and keen competition in many of the events. Roberts 1, P. Reardon 2. Men's diving competition: P. Reardon 1, R. Reardon 2. Women's diving competition: Miss Leigh 1. Man overboard competition: Ora (D. Roberts) 1. Bang and come back: Miss Poppy (F. Taylor) 1, Peerless (H. Miller) 2. Pennant race: Miss Poppy (F. Taylor) 1, Comet (J. Reardon) 2. Various sideshows did good business. Tonkin, of Christchurch, is spending a holiday in Kaikoura. RAINFALL IN ELLESMERE DISTRICT Monday's rainfall in the Ellesmere district was 154 points, making the December total 2? inches and the year's total exactly 41 inches, the highest on record.
