TROTTING NOTES Canterbury Park Meeting The Canterbury Park Trotting Club at last appears to be in line for a really successful meeting if the acceptances received for the first day of its meeting may be taken as a guide. Good class horses appear in at least two races, and the remaining events will be contest :U by horses that in a year or two may be racing amongst the best. Big fields do not necessarily mean good racing, and in this case the pacers and trotters still left in should provide racing of a high grade. The Canterbury Handicap, with one exception, is comprised of New Zealand Cup horses, all assessed at 4min 26sec or better. New Derby is the one horse missing from the field that provided such a fine race in the Ashburton Cup, but the Australian pacer would not have been an ornament in such a field if his recent performances can be taken as correct. He has not quite lived up to the very high opinions formed of him by New Zealanders who saw him race at Perth. Cloudy Range and Tempest were the hot favourites for the Ashburton Cup, and while Cloudy Range was set the big task of pacemaking, he collapsed only 50 yards from home. On the smaller Addington course he may do Setter. His stable-mate, Tempest, appears to be in rare form, and ready to win a two mile race. Graham Direct failed at Ashburton, as he did at Addington last month, but in the early quotations for Friday's meeting he shares favouritism with Cloudy Range and War Buoy. The last-named performed like a real racehorse at Ashburton, and M. B. Edwards evidently has him back to. his best*_. Roi.

l'Or has the big task of giving away 72 yards, and although he went a fine race until he stumbled when two furlongs from home at Ashburton. he will have to improve a good deal on his assessment to fill a place. Willow Wave must be taken on trust because of his very doubtful manners at the barrier, but if Evicus can reproduce her Ashburton form then the 12 yards penalty she has received will not put her out of court. After being slow to begin, Rollo went such a good race that his chances must be considered, and coupled with the genuine little grey gelding, Blue Mountain, L. A. Maidens has an excellent chance of providing the winner. Sir Guy. who is racing better than for some time past, may be suited by a shorter journey, and in what appears likely to- provide a fine race speculators may prefer the chances of Blue Mountain, War Buoy, and Tempest. Night Trotting An attempt to have the law amended to allow of night trotting in Victoria failed when introduced before the Legislative Assembly on December 16. The Melbourne "Sun-Pictorial" reports:—"A discordant note was struck by Mr Holland (Lab.) in the Legislative Assembly amid felicitous speeches on the close of the session. Mr Holland protested against the House having been deprived of an opportunity of discussing the Night Trotting Bill. This, he said, was due to trickery, treachery, and cowardice." Raced in New Zealand A recent winner in South Australia was Repeta Mac, by Petereta—Dixie Mac, at one time raced in New Zealand by N. L. Price. This was her second start in Adelaide, and she averaged 2min 30Jsec to the mile for two miles. The dam. Dixie Mac, by Tracey Alto (sire of the second dam of Tennessee Wood) was a ,great trotter in her day, and whilst on a visit to New Zealand from Victoria was mated with the American stallion Petereta. Repeta Mac was the result, and she was an unsuccessful starter in the trotting division of the Melbourne Derby. She then raced as Reta Mac, and finished seventh. As a five-year-old she raced in New Zealand, and was twice placed in three starts in 3min 47Jsec (a mile and a half), and 4min 48sec (two miles). In the following year she was placed three times in six starts in 4min 46i sec. 4min and 4min 42sec. For a long period the mare has been in the paddock, and her resurrection soon resulted in success. She was foaled in 1924. Stipendiary Stewards in Action The almost weekly suspension of drivers of trotters and pacers in Australia has suggested to New Zealanders that the sport in Australia is of very questionable standard, as compared with conditions in New Zealand, or that stipendiary stewards carry out their duties without fear or favour. Yet a writer in a Sydney paper is not satisfied that everything is being done to stamp out careless and incompetent driving. He says: "The suspension of a number of drivers at recent meetings at Harold Park has raised the question whether it is impossible to stamp out interference on the halfmile track. It is pointed out that nine times out pf 10 the interference generally takes place at the turn out of the straight, where the stewards are situated. At recent meetings such prominent drivers as E. L. McDonald, W. Picken, W. Townsend, and J. Solomon have all been suspended for causing interference in races, and the manner in which the stewards have started on the warpath to eliminate rough driving has caused many to wonder who will be next." Disqualifications in New Zealand are few and far between, and whether this is the result of the fairness of drivers or of lack of keenness on the part of stewards is a matter yet to be decided, but in days to come, when trotting authorities can afford the expense, it may be to the advantage of all to arrange an exchange of stipendiary stewards with Australia. The experiment, if only for a few months, would possibly be of benefit to all. Interference is not unknown on Canterbury tracks, and there was a case at Ashburton on Saturday that demanded judicial attention. Within 100 yards of the post a driver was guilty of what appeared to be deliberate interference, and the result was that one of the best horses in commission received a bump that put him off his balance at a critical stage of the race. This incident happened in front of the grandstand, and many expected the judge's placings to be altered. If any enquiry was made the result of it was not made public. WAIAU R.C. A Good Record The three-year-old King Neptune was made favourite for the Fergusson Handicap, and duly won. He began well, and followed the pacemaker, Rollicker, until reaching the straight, where he soon ran to the front, and stayed on soundly to win from the consistent Winlona. It was only King Neptune's third- start, but he has registered a second and two wins. He is a half-brother by Tidal to Limarch, King March, and Gay Marigold, and looks like a handicap horse in the making. Winlona ran another solid race, and Respectful came from last to get third. Gay Sister fought on at the end to be a very creditable fourth, and Roaming was closer in fifth position at the post than at any other stage. Rollicker showed a bold front in the lead until reaching the straight, and then retired quickly. Pcnnycomequick and Impersonator, who made a sharp run in the middle stages, "were prominent to the turn, but failed to go on. Cuddle'. Easy Task Only three started in the King's Plate. and the odds-on favourite. Cuddle, gained a very easy victory. Oratory and Custos gained just a slight advantage in a good start, and they had about half a length on her early, but she held her position on the rails, and was in front after going a furlong. Cuddle was always going well in the lead after that, and she came away in the straight. Oratory made an attempt to run to her after rounding the home turn, but she had no chance, and Morris did not knock her about unnecessarily, as she had no great difficulty in beating Custos for second. It was Cuddle's second successive win in the race, and she added another £250 to her stake earnings. The Hurdle Race On the strength of his good second on the first day. High Quality was installed favourite for the Ponsonby Hurdles, and he justified the confidence by finishing well to score from Lap Up. More patiently ridden than on Saturday, High Quality came from behind to tackle the leaders, Lap Up and Erination, approaching the last fence, and he soon gained the upper hand. It then appeared as if he would score comfortably, but Lap Up fought on very gamely, and he had to be ridden out, although he was going away at the post. Lap Up and Kanapa both ran fine races, and Erination improved, being prominent to the last fence, and tiring only in the last little bit. Modern Maid showed up well for over a mile and a half, but failed to stay on. Indolent and Merry Lap fell too early for any idea to be formed as to how they would have fared. The Summer Cup Relishing the easy track, King Rey scored a very decisive victory at a good price in the Summer Cup, for which Royal Appellant and Mazir were the favourites. Ability to take up a forward position early stood to King Rey and after following Sinking Fund, Crooning, and Royal Appellant for about seven furlongs he joined Sinking Fund in the lead at the turn. Once the straight was reached, King Rey was always a winner and he had a little in hand at the finish. Royal Appellant and Mazir had a great battle for second and the judge was unable to separate them. Royal Appellant was always in the first three, but Mazir was a shade unlucky, as- Armacourt went back on him near the three furlongs post, causing him to lost a couple of lengths at least. Ponty, who was on the outoide most of the way, ran a good race for fourth, and Mungatoon, Werohia, and Sinkin;; Fund did best of the others. Crooning went well to the turn and then faded. Jonathan was in a handy position entering the straight, but he also failed to run on. Plato cut-up badly and-finished last ..

The Juvenile Event The Criterion Handicap was easily won by Greenwich from the topweight, Bachelor King. In spite of conceding a fair amount of weight to the others, Greenwich and Bachleor King outclassed the field, Greenwich showed a clean pair of heels to the opposition, and really gave nothing a chance, although Bachelor King made a valiant effort to overtake her in the straight. The winner possesses brilliant speed and there are very few of the two-year-olds with more. Bachelor King ran his usual honest race and is a very consistent and game colt. The Crooner shaped creditably for third and Trilliarch was best of the others, who were well beaten. A Bunched Finish The Handicap provided one of the most exciting finishes of the meeting and the first four horses flashed past the post almost in line. Victory went to the top-weight, Loombination, who relished the easy ground, and ran on very strongly after being fifth into the straight. Lofty and Cerne Abbas both came home splendidly to fill the minor places. Neither had the best of luck in the running and they were on the outside most of the way, both being well back early. Small Boy was one of the leaders throughout and with Quadroon was responsible for most of the pace. Quadroon was the first of the pair to weaken and Small Boy was still in front inside the distance to fail only near the post. Vera Acre and Survoy ran creditable races. Carshalton and Valise were prominent to the home turn and then faded. Favourites Fail The favourites, Royal Dance and Trench Fight, were unplaced in the Electric Handicap, which Star Artist won at a good price. The finish was one of the finest of the meeting, and there was scarcely a horse that did not make a good showing, the field spreading across the course at the distance. Gay Seton and Galilee were responsible for a fast pace," and Star Artist, who was steadied in behind after jumping out cleanly from No. 1, ran on attractively to win from Sweet Rose. The latter also ran on strongly, and is in fine form. Galilee made an improved showing, and Tybalt went well for fourth. Gay Seton ran his best race for some time. Trench Fight did not have the best of runs, and was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Royfcl Dance looked likely after rounding the home turn, but failed to go on. A Surprise Result Another good price was returned when Shy finished very strongly to win the Plunkct Handicap from another outsider, Haut Monde, who paid a fine dividend. The race was run at a last pace early with the result that many of the field were in trouble some distance from the post. After Light Comedy had led early, Haut Monde and De Friend, who moved up very quickly at the five furlongs, made most of the running. Haut Monde fought on solidly, but had no chance of holding off Shy, who came with an irresistible run to win going away. De Friend stopped quickly near the end, and it was left to Wait and See to run on and get third. Chief Ranger was always one of the leading division, but he could make no impression in the straight, although he battled on for fourth. Greek Gold looked likely at the distance, but failed in the last furlong. Martara did not jump out well, and although he ran up smartly on the outside nearing the turn, could not go on. Light Coniedy failed to do as well as on the first day. HANDICAPS FOR THIRD DAY (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, December 29. ELLERSLIE HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. One mile. st. lb. st. lb. A Poor Race Most of the runners in the South ifillend Handicap made mistakes, and it was a poor race. On the strength of his forward showing at Gore and his being ridden by D. C. Watts, Appomatox was made a good favourite, and he made light of his task by going away to a good lead early and holding it throughout with ease. Blue Logan raced in second position practically all the way, and beat Imperial Wave just as easily for second money. Imperial Wave made a good run over the last half-mile, but she had an impossible task. Bell Norris made a fast run into third place in the first half-mile, but tired into fourth place. Braemar began well but broke early. Always in Front Grand Meteor led all the way in the Novice Harness Handicap, and never left the issue in doubt in the run home. Coherto moved into third place five furlongs from home and was going like a winner at the top of the straight, but he weakened and just beat Capri. It was Coherto's first start, and he gave an encouraging performance. He is a three-year-old by Peter Moko, from Lady Evelyn. Capri was forced to cover a lot of extra ground, otherwise he would have made it harder for the winner. Stewards' Handicap Overproof tried to win the Stewards' Handicap all the way, but Leitrim raced past him half a mile from home and beat him comfortably. Desert Cloud was never far away from the leaders, and was a fair third, and Picotee, who finished fourth, was always prominent and had every chance. The favourite, Eddie Tolan, began brilliantly, but broke after going two furlongs and lost fully 60 yards. He showed a brilliant burst of speed to run into a winning position at the home turn,, when he broke again and wrecked his chance completely. Rollalong broke at the start. A Southland Record The Christchurch-trained Double Great won the Winton Trotting Club Handicap'very easily, and made a new two-mile record for Southland. He was in fifth position for about a mile, then he commenced to move up, and over the last couple of furlongs he left the opposition standing. It was a test for speed and briUiance. as the first mile was run in 2min 16 3-ssec, and the pace was on all the way. The previous best time for two miles in Southland was 4min 30 l-ssec, put up by Satin King in this race in 1930, and Double Great beat it by a fifth of a second. An enquiry was held into Double Great's form compared with his display at Gore last week, when he faded out at the end of a mile and a half, and was the last to finish. The explanation that he was off colour at the time as a result of the train journey was accepted. Moko Child ran to the front half a mile from home and looked like fighting it out with the winner, but she just lasted long enough to beat Renown's Best who made a wonderful run over the last si* furlongs. Nelson Pointer

dashed to the front inside the first halt-mile and led for about a mite and a half when he compounded. Belle Grattan displayed briUiance by run ning up to the leaders early after breaking at the start, but she faded oTbadfy oter the last half-mi e. Blue <sr>nrir hrnke early an the race, anu then finished fourth, but he was never dangerous. Ma Waro wrecked lus chance at the start. Harold Guy was improved by his race at Gore, but was never dangerous. The Saddle Race The Members' Handicap saw Waipahi and Budge fight out g their Gore duel again, and for the second urn the honours went to the former wnu, however, had to put up a rm 1| and a stamps the handsome Zvejfv- o }* son of Prince Pointer as a pacer with unhmUed possibilities.. The race does njrt require much description. Budge ran to the front early and with half the dis mnre covered he was three lengms S fromDirect BellL who was six lengths clear of Waipahi. Three lur 'longs from home, Wa'pahi 30ined Budse and in a neck and neck stru 0 glelown the straight, the the verdict by a neck. Direct Bell tiied and Abel got third money 25 lengths away. Fair Voyage Makes Good Driven by-M. Holmes the Happy Voyage gelding, Fair Voyage lived up to his private reputation, for the fifst time, in the President's Handicap. He was never further back than fourth and led into the straight to win comfortably from Blue Logan, who was one of the leaders throughout Braemar who finished third, showed speed in patches, but made too many mistakes. Edwin Bingen was prominent for a mile and a half but never settled down properly and tired badly over the last half mile. Patty Todd did best of the handicap horses to finish fourth, but she was well back at the finish. A Creditable Effort McGlusky scored a meritorious win in the Improvers' Handicap. He was badly pocketed all the way to the straight, but was able to get clear at the top of the straight and he burst through in brilliant style to beat Worthv Claire, who made practically all the running. Norma Grattan broke badly at the start, and did well to finish third, Hytemoana was second into the straight, but faded into fourth place. Jean Dewey broke at the start and finished sixth. Guywin, Black Shadpw, Autogo, and Vinola failed to stay. Farewell Handicap Nelson Pointer made up his handicap very fast in the Farewell Handicap, and taking charge at the end of five furlongs drew out and battled on under pressure to beat Ma Waro, who lost fully four seconds at the start, and was a certainty beaten on that account. Vologda also broke at the start and put up a fine performance to finish third. Belle Grattan made two bad mistakes and Double Great left his feet when making a likely run half a mile from home. Rollalong lost his chance at the start. AUCKLAND T.C. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, December 29.
