Benefiting by the mistakes of others, and trotting solidly all the way, Pura Bingen scored an end-to-end victory in the Selby Handicap. Pura Bingen was having only her second race, and was very little fancied, paying double figures on both machines. She is trained and was driven by F. Jones, who at one time raced Tony Victor. Vain Lad, who was bracketed with Swordsman and started favourite, looked like winning when he reached the front after going half the journey, but he broke badly, and lost a good deal of ground before settling down. Vain Lad broke again when challenging Pura Bingen in the run home, but he managed to get second. Baby Triumph finished solidly just to beat Sophy Bingen for third. Listowel was responsible for a fine effort after losing all his handicap at the start and being right behind the field before commencing to trot. It appeared as if he would have been very difficult to beat with a good beginning. Swordsman, Grand Triumph, and All Special made mistakes in the running. A Smart Juvenile The three-year-old True Trust was responsible for a great surprise in winning the December Handicap, paying over three-quarters of a century on the win machine and double figures for a place. True Trust had started only once previously, and is a good-man-nered pacer who went smoothly all the way. A. Bryce saved every inch of ground for True Trust, and was able to get through on the inside when the leader, Scrap Iron, came away from th,_ rails. Scrap Iron attempted to lead throughout, but he weakened in the las half-furlong, and could only finish fourth. Frank Best finished solidly to get second, and Queenie Direct battled on very gamely. Kia Kaha spoilt a chance when he broke at the top, and Eyre did likewise when sYe tangled at the home turn while racing in the lead with Scrap Iron. Musketeer extinguished his chance by a bad break early. The backmarker, Logan Palm, was not far away at the finish and made a very creditable showing. Plutus Wins The southerner, Plutus, was not as well fancied as Tollgate for the Grandstand Handicap, which he won very easily. Plutus led for a couple of furlongs and then dropped in behind Guid Hairst, whom he trailed to the home turn and then put the issue beyond doubt quickly by sprinting past the leader with ease. General Sarsfield, after a bad beginning, paced a sound race for second. Bolinda King stayed

on solidly under pressure to get third and pay a fine price for a place. Star Pronto finished fast from a long way back to be a close fourth, his time, 3min 14 3-ssec, being one of the fastest ever recorded at Epsom. The favourite, Tollgate, broke up at the start and gave no trouble. Although he made a fair showing, Guid Hairst tired quickly at the end, and Cherrill also weakened in the run home. The Auckland Cup The successful trainer, F. J. Smith, scored his first Auckland Trotting Cup victory when he won with King's Warrior, who was a good third fancy to Gr«nd Mogul and Red Shadow. The run of the race favoured King's Warrior, who followed Smooger for a mile and three-quarters and then dashed to the lead to win narrowly in a hard finish with Rey Spec and Red Shadow, both of whom made valiant efforts in the run home. Rey Spec trailed King's Warrior throughout, but he could not head the latter, who went on in the style of a real stayer. Red Shadow paced a great race and it was unfortunate for him that even though he went 4min 16 2-ssec off 4min 23sec, he could not finish closer than third. Smooger made a creditable showing, although he was beaten two furlongs from home. Bonny Azure lost her chance at the start, and Grand Mogul lost ground when he broke after going six furlongs. Bingen Palm was never dangerous. Another Auckland Victory Patiently driven by W. J. Broughton, the improving Nawton Parrish finished well to win the Christmas Handicap. Bedford attempted to lead all the way, and he was still in front after reaching the straight, only to be headed inside the distance by Nawton Parrish, who secured a fine run on the rails. Bedford tangled under pressure and fell, bringing down Our Summer. There were a couple of mishaps earlier in the race. Royal Jewel and Sir Frank falling at the mile post and Kewpie's Crest and Hot Point at the home turn. The each-way favourite Mountain Flight paced a fine race for second, but Nawton Parrish was just too good for her in the run home. Trevor de Oro was a close third, after having to go on the outside most of the way, and Kenworthy finished on to get fourth. Unhoppled Trotters The Mangere trainer, J. T. Paul, has been very successful in the Rowe Memorial Handicap, yesterday's win being his fourth in the event and the second with Great Admiral., The winner, a six-year-old son of Nelson Bingen, is one of the most solid and dependable trotters in commission, and he made no semblance of a mistake throughout the contest. After a false start the field got away over an hour and a half behind scheduled time, Mute pulling to the front passing the stands the first time. Corrianda showed the way to Franz Derby, Mute, Bittersweet, Mountain Sun, Gala Day, Fleet Arrow, and Great Admiral, who still had to make up the bulk of his handicap. At the end of another circuit Franz Derby, Bittersweet, and Corrianda were together, making play from Great Admiral, Mountain Sun. and Meadow King. Great Admiral joined Bittersweet in the lead crossing the top, the former leaving his companion before the straight, the pair being attended by Mountain. King, Corrianda, and Captain Bolt at wide intervals. Meadow King broke when putting in his run, making the task of Great Admiral all the easier. Corrianda was a fair third, followed by Captain Bolt, Bittersweet, Mountain Sun, and Franz Derby. Bittersweet, the win favourite, went very well until the last quarter. Great Jewel Wins The improving Great Jewel recorded a sound performance in winning the Akarana Handicap, for which Spessiva and Superior Rank were the favourites. Great Jewel paced smoothly throughout, and when asked for a final effort in the straight he responded irj the most determined fashion just to win from Baron Grand. The first and second horses were practically level all the way up the straight, and they both displayed fine courage. An outsider, Aircraft, made a good attempt to lead all the way, and he retained command until less than 100 yards from the post, when he tired badly. However, he hung on to get third and return a fine place divi-* dend. Imposter made a creditable showing, and Superior Rank finished fast in fifth position after, getting a long way back early. Spessiva also ran below expectations. She made a sharp run along the back, but was unable to maintain it. Bonny Azure Improves Bonny Azure made amends for her disappointing display in the Auckland Trotting Cup, in which she failed to go kindly early, by winning the St. Heliers Handicap in fine style at a good price. She did not begin as smartly as the favourite, Nervie's Last, but she ran to the front before going three furlongs and was never afterwards headed. She paced smoothly throughout and stayed on too well for Nervie's Last when he challenged gamely under pressure. Prince Pedro made a sharp dash about three furlongs from home, but he was unable to make any impression on the two in front in the final stages. Mocast and Great Parrish both paced solid races and may improve. Lady Fame was going nicely on the rails behind the leaders when she broke three furlongs from home.
