RELIEF OF DISTRESS
* GRANT MADE TO MAYOR OF NEW BRIGHTON The Mayor of Brighton (Mr E. L. Smith) received an allocation of £25 yesterday morning from the grant of £SOO made by the Government to the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr J. W. Beanland). “I am very grateful for this amount, and I will use it on seme urgent cases which we have had waiting for some time,” said Mr Smith last evening. “A part of the money will be given to some of our old-age pensioners who have sickness in their homes. Every effort has been made to see that all have a happy Christmas, and I will be obliged if any case of urgent distress which needs relief is brought to my notice, right up to the last minute.” Mr Smith said that there was less distress in the borough than last Christmas, but he was anxious that there should be no persons in need during Christmas.
