NEW BOWER BRIDGE WANTED

TRAMWAY BOARD’S DECISION Efforts to induce the Main Highways Board to authorise the replacement of the Bower bridge at Wainoni are to be made by the Christchurch Tramway Board This decision was made at a meeting of the board on Saturday after it had considered the effect on the board's service to Wainoni caused by a restriction on the weight of buses using the bridge. The works and traffic committee reported that the Heathcote County Council had published a notice that the maximum load on the bridge was restricted to six tons and a half, including the weight of the vehicles, and to 10 tons for a multi-axled vehicle, including the weight of the vehicle. This affected the operation of the board’s buses on the Wainoni run and necessitated a limitation of the number of passengers, including the driver, which could be carried over the bridge the Q buses to nine and the Rcgals to 10 passengers, including the driver. The committee recommended that interested local bodies should be consulted with a view to asking the Main Highways Board for a new bridge. The board decided to adopt the recommendation and to ask the Heathcote County Council to call a conference as soon as possible.
