ADDINGTON MARKET

"HOT" FAT LAMB SALE

MUTTON SELLS WELL

The feature of yesterday's Addington stock market was the keen sale of fat lambs. The export schedule provides, for BJd per lb for 36's and under, but there were numerous cases yesterday when exporters exceeded this rate by up to a halfpenny per Jb. It was the best sale of lambs for a number of years. Butchers generally had to pay more than this figure in order to provide for the Christmas demand. Fat sheep held values well for wethers, but ewes were easier. Exporters competed briskly for wethers. A heavy entry of fat cattle sold on a parity with the rates of last week, the high prices for other classes of meat doubtless being a factor in the free demand. Store sheep comprised for the most part adult wethers, and there was again a firm demand for these. Porkers and vealers were a shade easier owing to the heavy supplies, but baconers sold at late rates throughout. STORE SHEEP The entry of store sheep provided the poorest selection for some time, comprising mainly wethers, with an odd pen of ewes and lambs, and one pen of ewe hoggets. There was a very firm market for the indifferent selection of wethers. One pen of Chatham Island wethers made 23s 6d, with Marlborough wethers fetching 18s 3d. Wether hoggets from the same quarter made 18s 6d. A pen of shorn ewe hoggets realised 325. and a pen of ewes and lambs went at 18s 9d. Altogether, it was a keen sale. Representative sales were:— Wethers—B3 at 17s lOd, 84 at 17s sd, 65 at 225, 35 at 20s, 160 at 18s 3d. 95 at 17s lOd, 96 merinos at 10s 3d, 139 at 17s 3d, 163 at 15s 6d, 17 at 225. 81 at 15s 3d, 81 at 15s, 81 at 14s 6d. 69 from Chatham Islands at 23s 6d, 171 six "id eight-tooth at 114 s 9d. Wether Hoggets—24l at 13s Id, 59 at 18s 6d. FAT LAMBS The fat lamb sale was the dearest for years. From start to finish there was the keenest competition from export buy--1 ers. Exporters were operating in advance of the schedule, paying from 9d to 9,Jd a pound, with butchers operating above them. The works' were paying 30s and more for heavy prime lambs. The yarding totalled close on 1900 head compared with 950 head last week, and was insufficient for all requirements. The highest price paid for a number of years was realised towards the end of the sale, when a pen of 24 lambs sold on account of E. McCarthy (Prebbleton) at 36s 7d. There were several sales at more than 355. Values were as under: — Extra prime heavy lambs, to 3Gs 7d. ! Prime heavy Jambs. 29s to 325. Prime medium-weight lambs, 27s to 28s 6d. FAT SHEEP The penning in the fat sheep section J was larger than that of last "week, and ! comprised about 4250 head. Some lines, from the south were included. The quality , generally was fair to good. The market; opened at about last week's rates, but ■ ewes, of which there were more forward I than at recent sales, inclined to ease as j the sale progressed, and in the final stages were down by up to Is 6d a head, j Wethers maintained values until the final stages. Exporters operated steadily at up : to 25s for wethers suitable for export. ■ and in the later stages they made some j purchases of ewes. Considering the heavy ! entry, the sale was a firm one, and only [ odd pens were passed. Top price for ■ wethers was secured by Mrs C. H. Ridgen ; (Greendale), who sold a pen of 12 ewes j at 32s Id. Best ewe price was 27s Id. for a pen of nine from D. Glllanders (Green- I dale). j Values were as under:— I Extra prime heavy wethers, to 32s Id. ! Prime heavy wethers. 27s to 20s. Quality was not up to the usual standard, more medium and indifferent cows being penned than of late. The condition of the steer section was, good, with a sprinkling of very prime lines of medium-heavy-weights. Due to the "hot" lamb sale, no doubt, and the fact that there is only one more sale* before the Christmas holidays, there'was a firm market and prices were fully up to those ruling a ween ago, notwithstanding the largely increaseu entry. The only class in which there was a tendency to weaken was ior cows, the neavy entry of which met with a slow sale. Tnc uale was very uniform, being free of the irregularity tnat marked last week's prices. Aiv-«utstaiiding draft of 18 steers was forward Irom Sharp Bros. (Halswell) and averaged £l4 'is 3d, top pen of three making £ls 7s 6d. Nine of them were Shorthorns and the Other nine Hercfords, and they were on outstanding lot. VEALERS The entry in the vealer section was a large one. Over the first half of the sale the demand was fully up to that of last week, particularly for the better quality, but as the requirements of the trade be'came filled there was a distinct slackening for medium sorts, which Increased as the sale progressed. Whilst the primest sorts were little affected, others were down by 8s to 10s a head. Values were as under.: — Big runners, to £8 8s Gd. Good runners, £4 15s to £6. Medium runners, £3 to £4 10s. Good calves, 35s to £2 12s 6d.' Ordinary calves. 25s to 30s. Small calves to 21s. STORE CATTLE The store cattle entry was of normal size, and most of the few straight coloured pens forward were young cattle. For all sorts there was an active demand. A pen of six exceptionally good Black Poll yearling steers sold at £7 2s, and another of 19 Black Poll yearling steers and heifers at £5 ss. A pen of grown mixed coloured steers made £7 7s, a small pen of semi-fat cows £6, and a pen of 10 young cows for fattening £5 ss. DAIRY CATTLE The entry was 80 head, compared with 50 last week. There was not much of good quality included, and with the poorer class and the heavier entry the market failed to maintain last week's rates, although the better sorts met with good enquiry. Values were as under:— Best second and third calvers, to £9 15s. Good second and third calvers, £7 to £8 10s. Ordinary cows, to £5. Best heifers, to £7 12s 6d. Good heifers, £5 15s to £6 10s. Medium heifers, £4 10s to £5 10s. FAT PIUS The entry in the porker section was an exceptionally large one. and there was a further easing of 2s to 2s 6d a head. Baconers were also penned in fairly heavy supply, but last week's values were maintained right through, the freedom of the market being notable considering the size of the entry. Values were as under: — Porkers. 28s 8d to 33s 6d. Heavy porkers, 35s 6d to 38s Od. Extra heavy porkers, 39s 0d to 44s 6d. Average price per lb, 5Jd to Cd. Baconers, 47s 8d to 55s 6d. Heavy baconers, 58s 6d to £3 6s Gd. Extra heavy baconers, £3 10s 6d to £2 18s 6d. Average price per lb, 51d to 6d. STORE PIGS There was again a heavy entry in the store pig pens, and values were a shade easier than at last week's sale for all but heavy stores, which maintained recent rates. Values were:— Weaners, 10s to 16s, extra good to TOs. Slips, 17s to 20s. Small stores, 19s 6d to 225. Medium stores, 22s 6d to .Ms 6d. Large stores, 25s t>'d to 30s.

STORTPORI) LODGE

(P 8193 i*iOCUTIUH I'ILRO&iH.) HASTINGS, December 16. An casing in store sheep was the principal change in live stock values at Stortford Lodge to-day. In a moderate yarding of fat cattle, quality throughout was better than that offered for some weeks, with very few secondary quality cows forthcoming. Ox beef met a good enquiry, heavy pens averaging £l2 9s 6d, and medium £ll 4s 6d. Female cattle sold readily, heavy prime, heifers -making to £9 ss, and best lines .. of prime cows to £8 15s. The very small entry of store cattle was made up of Jersey sorts. A much larger yarding of store sheep was offered, rape and store lambs predominating, with several drafts of stationbred two and four-tooth wethers. Best lines of lambs in very forward order made to 19s 4d. but small-grown, poor to medium sorts were slow of sale. To-day's offering was the beginning of the season for lambs, the quality not being up to expectations. Top lines of wethers in very forward order made 245. Is 6d easier than last week. A short yarding accounted for a slight rise in the nrices of fat sheep, extra prime ewes making to 245, and top lines of lambs to 26s Gd.
