PRINCE EDWARD IN AUSTRIA

guest at castle near VIENNA H0S X IS BARON EUGENE ROTHSCHILD i , I ( ! GENDARMES ON (HARD j (l-SHED F3ES3 ASSOCIATION— COTYKKi HT.) (Received December 14. 7.30 p.m.) VIENNA, December 13. It is officially announced that Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor, will stay at Enzesfeld Castle, near Vienna, as the guest of one of the Austrian Rothschilds, with whom he stayed after his cruise on the Adriatic last summer. He arrived at 9.15 pm. and went to the castle by car. The Duke stated, through Colonel piers Legh, who was his equerry when he was Prince of Wales, that he had enjoyed a comfortable journey. He was grateful to the 00 journalists and photographers accompanying him that he had been undisturbed. Many dignitaries were assembled at the station. The Austrian Government was not represented because the visit was considered to be strictly private. Sir Walford Selby, the British Minister, attended unofficially. Prince Edward looked well and rested. He allowed photographers outside the station to photograph him. The Duke of Windsor's train left Salzburg for Vienna at 5 p.m. The Duke emerged from the carriage for a short period, surrounded by police and detectives, while bystanders sang the national anthem and cheered. The Duke had spent most of the journey sleeping. His darkened special coach was guarded in turn as it passed through the respective countries by French, Swiss, and Austrian detectives, in addition to two British detectives who accompanied him from England. His Cairn terrier lay in his master's sleeping berth, also on guard. Historic Castle The owner of Enzesfeld Castle, where the Duke of Windsor is expected to remain until Christmas, after which he will probably visit the Austrian Tyrol, is Baron Eugene Rothschild, head of the Vienna branch of the family. He married an American, Countess Katharine Schoenborn, formerly Miss Wolff, a daughter of Mr C. Wolff, of Philadelphia. Enzesfeld Castle was erected in the twelfth century. It 'suffered greatly in various wars, being repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. It is now equipped in modern fashion, and in the grounds is Austria’s finest golf course. The castle stands on a rock dominating a small village 25 miles from Vienna. A special detachment of gendarmes has left Baden to guard the castls. “Any messages for me?” was the Duke of Windsor’s first question after leaving the train at Vienna; He was handed a bundle of telegrams and letters which he crammed into his pockets. Soon afterwards he was whisked away in Baron Rothschild’s limousine to Enzesfeld, accompanied by Colonel Piers Legh and a valet carrying the Cairn terrier. It is reported that the Duke telephoned to Mrs Simpson immediately on his arrival. He may possibly consult the ear specialist, Dr. Neumann. A message from Cannes announced that Mrs Simpson ■•/ ill not meet the Duke of Windsor during the next five months until her decree of divorce has been made absolute. Lord Brownlow, carrying mes•ages from Mrs Simpson, will join the Duke of Windsor in Austria. i KING’S BIRTHDAY IN ENGLAND NO OFFICIAL CELEBRATIONS (Received December 14, 7.30 p.m.) ; LONDON, December 13.
