FOUND WITH OPIUM WORTH £4OO

♦ FINE OF £25 IMPOSED ON SEAMAN (FEBBS ASSOCIATION TBEEGEAM.) WELLINGTON, December 8. Twenty tins of opium, of a total retail value of about £4OO, were seized by detectives and customs officials at the Thorndon station last night just before the departure of the Auckland express. Basil Francis Pocock, aged 26, a seaman, pleaded guilty before Mr Ferner, S.M., to-day to being found in. possession of a dangerous drug imported in contravention of the act. It was explained that the accused was arrested after he had bought a train ticket, and the tins were found hidden among clothing in a suitcase. Mr Hardie Boys, for the accused, urged that he was not the person who brought the onium into the country, but was merely a carrier from Wellington to Auckland, where he belonged. The accused was convicted and fined £25 and costs. He was allowed a week in which to pay.
