CANADA'S DESIRE

“MISTRESS IN HER OWN HOUSE” LOYALTY TO THE EMPIRE (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)' WELLINGTON, December 8. “Canada to-day is just as strongly British and as keen a supporter of the Empire as any of the other Dominions, but she has adopted the policy of deciding each question on its merits. In other words, she wants to be mistress in her own house,” said Mr C. B. Howard, Liberal member of Parliament for the County of Sherbrook, Quebec, who arrived to-day by the Makura from San Francisco. He is bound for the Empire Parliamentary Association conference at Adelaide. Mr Howard said that things in Canada were going well. “We were a good deal slower in coming back than you fellows, because the Bennett Government when it was in was not radical and stayed solid, but things are coming out now in good shape.” The re-election of President Roosevelt, was of great benefit to Canada because the trade treaty between the United States and Canada was now assured of a six years’ run —five years in the term of the Government and a year that was necessary before cancellation, “We want to give preference to the Empire, but naturally the States are our nearest and handiest customers. We want to trade with anyone who wants to trade with us, but we prefer the Empire,” said Mr Howard. He added., that there was no trouble with Japanese competition, mainly because Canada was too far away to get any bad attacks.
