CRICKET AT RUGBY PARK

TO THI CDITOX Cll TH» 9**39 Sir,-For some months past there has been some considerable dissatisfaction among cricketers regarding the use of Rugby Park as a senior cricket wicket. The reasons for this arc: so obvious that it would be superfluous to repeat them here. After many protests it was thought that this year senior matches would not bj played at this park, but strangely enough the Lancaster Park-Old Collegians match was set down for this place. We are all aware of the farcical position created by this inexplicable move. After one cricketer had been painfully injured the two captains wisely decided to postpone the game. This did not seem to please the management e ramiltee of the Cricket Council, who decided that the match must be continued, with the result that once again this match has been abandoned. Surely this could have been avoided. There are at least three possible representatives in these teams who have thus been deprived of three weeks’ cricket at a time when the practice would be most beneficial The committee should realise that it it controlling cricket, not ruling it, and decisions made as they have been must react very unfavourably on the sport It becomes more apparent that members of the committee are out of touch with present-day cricket conditions, and their place should be filled by those to whom these needs are more apparent. Cricketers throughout the province heartily endorse the actions of I. B. Cromb. who, by his determined and courageous stand against the stubborn and ill-advised decisions of the committee, has shown the way to a more sensible and satisfactory system of . cricket control of Canterbury. I only hope that other captains besides L. R. Dunster. will take a stand behind the New Zealand captain, in his endeavour to secure better management lof the greatest of summer sports.--1 Yours, etc.. I SPECTATOR, i December 7. 193(1.
