SAFES BLOWN OPEN AT AUCKLAND

ATTEMPT TO ROB VESTRY INTERRUPTED (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, November 30. Hearing a sound like a gun fired, Canon Fanccurt rushed from the vicarage into St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral at 2 o’clock this morning and found the vestry filled with smoke. Thieves had blown the safe. Apparently scared from hiding by Canon Fancourt’s entry, they had disappeared. The safe had been blown open with gelignite. The contents, consisting of cash totalling £SO, and gold and silver chalices, were untouched. Detectives were promptly on the scene. Cassocks and surplices belonging to the choir had been used to deaden the sound.

Dining the week-end, the Prince Edward Theatre in Karangahape road was entered and the safe was opened with gelignite. It contained only documents and a small sum of money. The premises of Cavanagh and Company, motor specialists, of Symonds street, were also entered. The burglars’ job was simple, as a key had been left in the safe. The sum of £3 was taken.
