THE CORONATION

The special committee of the Lyttelton Borough, Council which was set up to arrange for the celebration in Lyttelton of*the Coronation next year presented its report at the council’s meeting last night. The committee recommended that the council provide a sum of approximately £3OO for the purchase "of the necessary British materials, the amount to be set aside in next year’s estimates, and that the committee be authorised to place orders for materials immediately. That the decorations in. elude strings of coloured lights across the streets in the main business block; that the Council Chambers and fire brigade station be decorated; that an illuminated crown be erected on the Council Chambers corner; that a grant of at least £SO be made to the procession committee; that £SO be provided for entertainments for the children and £SO for the purchase of hags for the children. The report further recommended that a letter be forwarded to Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., asking him to approach the Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) to ascertain if it could be possible to arrange for a warship to be in Lyttelton during the Coronation celebrations. Mr McCombs forwarded a copy of a reply received from the Hon. F. Jones, stating that enquiries were being made as to the possibility of the council’s request for a warship to be at Lyttelton being granted. Cr. Sargentina said the figures in the report were only a basis on which to work. The report was adopted. Borough Council The Lyttelton Borough Council met last evening. Present; The Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton), Crs. R. Fenton, W. W. Toy, J. N. Neville, G. S. Morris, T. B. Hempstalk, J. D. Sargentina, R. Cairns. W. T. Foster. The New Zealand Kennel Club applied for a grant from the council towards the cost of research work in immunising dogs from distemper. The letter was received.

A grant of £1 Is was made to the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children.

In reply to a letter from the council, requesting that the grounds at the rear of the tennis courts should be cleared, the secretary of the Te Whaka Tennis Club wrote stating that it was the opinion of the committee of the club that the area referred to was a council reserve, and should be kept in order by the council. As to the complaint of unnecessary noise by players on Sunday afternoons, the writer stated that the council’s letter had been referred to those members who use the courts on Sundays.

In reply to a question by Cr. Neville, the Mayor said the club leased the whole area. Cr. Sargentina said that, according to the letter, the club did not lease the ground on which the pavilion stood. On the motion of Cr. Fenton, seconded by Cr. Sargentina, it was decided to reply that the club would have to clear the area. Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., forwarded a letter received by him from the Minister for Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, in reply to a request by the -council that rail-cars should be placed in service on the Christchurch-Lyttel-ton line. The letter stated that as more rail-cars became available, the matter of placing them in service in suitable localitic vould be considered on the merits of each district concerned, The letter was received. Magistrate’s Court At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Messrs F. E. Sutton and W. C. Cleary, J’s.P„ Alfred Edward Arundale, a ship’s fireman, pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly behaviour while drunk in the Excelsior Hall on Saturday night. Sergeant D. Wilson said that accused had been refused admittance to a dance and had thereupon caused a disturbance at the door. A fine of £2 was imposed, in default I seven days’ imprisonment.

West Lyttelton School At the invitation of the committee, Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., made an inspection of the West Lyttelton School building yesterday morning. He was met by Mr D. Kerr, chairman, and Messrs A. T. E. Miller, C. Jackways, and G. Voyce, members of the committee. It was explained to Mr McCombs that, in the opinion of the committee, the accommodation at the school was inadequate for the 150 children on the roll. The building was 50 years old and two classrooms, in which were Standards I. and 11. and 111. and IV., had practically no sunshine in the winter months. The committee' and parents desired a new building, with provision for ample sunshine and fresh air. The playing area attached to the school was too small, and the committee hod asked the Education Board to purchase the adjoining section, over which the committee had secured an option to purchase. Mr McCombs expressed himself as sympathetic to the requests and promised to assist the committee in its endeavours. He said he would refer the requests to the Education Department and to the Minister for Education, the Hon, P. Fraser. Bain Delays Shipping Light rain set in at Lyttelton yesterday 7 morning and became very heavy during the afternoon and evening. Work was started on all the vessels in port, but there were frequent interruptions during the morning, and work finally ceased at 10.30. Vessels delayed were the Mahia, Waikouaiti, Waipiata, Wainui, Port Whangarei, Gale, and Holmdale.
