Nominations for the Waiau Racing Club’s annual fixture, on New Year’s Day. will close at 9 p.m. on Saturday. Well Related Toorak, a winner at Feilding yesterday. is a three-year-old gelding by Philamor from Isa by Absurd from Valerie by Hallowmas from Bonny Portland, and is th 3 a close relation to Reremoana, Golden Hair, View Halloo, and Lady Cavendish. Toorak was sold as a yearling for 35 guineas, and is now the property of Messrs -Abbott and Vincent, and is trained at Carterton by W. D. Moroney. Great Northern Derby Mala will not be run in the Great Northern Derby, as he has been turned out for a three months’ spell, after which he will be prepared for another Sydney trip. With Gallio. Wild Chase, and Mala out of the Derby, there will be good opportunities for other three-year-olds, who were considered to be held safe by the three mentioned. With Trench Fight. Custos. and Siegmund engaged there should nevertheless be an interesting race, and present indications point to the Riccarton pair fighting out the finish. At Trentham S. J. Reid is working Brunhilde the reverse way at Trentham. with a view to racing her, at the Auckland summer meeting. Cuddle is making good progress in her preparation for the Auckland Cup. She is to have a race at Otaki before going north. A Lean Period Racing is a game of ups and downs, and luck, good or bad, will always ( change before long. Such is the philosophic view the Trentham trainer. T. R. George, takes of the lean time he ; has been having the last five weeks or so, says the “Post.” “It cannot always go my way without a break here and there.” George mentioned with a smile when discussing his recent run of outs, broken by Darecourt’s win at Feilding on Saturday. George had ill luck piled up high last week, but he believes it may be a sign of the turn. Not only has Might, one of the most forward horses in the stable, gone amiss when ready to win a good prize, but George has also lost the services temporarily of his best apprentice. S. R. Farland, who broke an arm while at play on Tuesday evening. Farland would have been a very useful boy on the light-weights of the team during the holiday racing carnival. Back from Melbourne In addition to Queen of Song, the following horses belonging to Mr G. J. Barton arrived at Bluff yesterday from Melbourne in charge of S. Pyper; Desert Chief, Gay Circle, Jack Horner, Bobalink. Silver Bond, and Sir Ken. These are to be treated to a spell at Wingatui before returning to Melbourne to be prepared for the autumn meetings. Silver Bond, a two-year-old by Pink Coat from Victory Bond, was considered to be unlucky to be beaten in a race at Caulfiel . on November 21, as he covered a lot of extra ground turning into the straight, and was then only beaten by three-quarters of a length. Silver Bond, who was ridden by J. W. Jennings, was at good double figures. Trentham Sales The closing of entries for the National Yearling Sales, to be held at Trentham on January 21, indicates that the catalogue will be one of the largest and most representative yet submitted. The sires to be represented include Limond, Posterity, Pombal, Nightmarch, Robespierre, Rabbi. Tidal, Lord Warden, Night Raid, Iliad. Martarma, Siegfried, Beau Pere, Hunting Song. Lackman, Cape Horn, Philamor, Raceful, Heroic, Gainscourt. Colossus, Lord Quex, Tractor, Pink Coat, Bambury. Colonel 'Cygnus, Defoe, Black Ronald, Daniloff, and Vaals. youngsters at Feilding There were five two-year-olds in the Juvenile Stakes at Feilding on Saturday, who had not been seen in public previously. Smoke Screen (the Winner), Ruling Star, Gay Hunting, Amatory, and Merry Thought. Smoke Screen is by Limond from Curtain, by Thespian from Cowl, and is a brother to Pelmet, Gladswood and

Loud Applause. He is owned by Mr Grace, of Wanganui, who paid 600 guineas for him at Trentham in January last. , . Ruling Star is a bay colt by Chief Ruler from the Limond—Cowl mare Phrosa, the dam previously of Hilary, and is owned by his breeder, Mr G. F. Moore, for whom he is being trained by O. Cox. Gay Hunting is the bay Hunting Song—Lady Waikohu colt for whom Mr S. Austin, of Foxton, paid 250 guineas at the last January sales, and he is a brother to Lady Loura, a two-year-old winner last season in Sydney. Amatory is a chestnut gelding by Kiosk, from the Glenullin mare Gold Peak, dam also of Royal Peak. Merry Thought is a bay filly by Night Raid from the Shambles—Skydream mare Nightmare, and is the lirst foal of her dam. She raced in the colours of her breeder, Mr L. H. Collinson, who also raced Nightmare. TROTTING NOTES Reminders Nominations for the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close to-day. when entries for the North Island Challenge Cup and payments for the Great Northern Derby will also fall due. Acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close to-day at 5 p.m. Westport Trotting- Club Saturday next is the day set aside by the Westport Trotting Club for the taking of nominations for its meeting on December 26 and 28. The programme is one that will appeal to Can-terbux-y owners for no stake is worth less than £IOO, and the classes are suitable for a big number of horses at present in work. The Gothard Handicap is the principal event on the opening day and, worth £l5O, it is for horses that can do a mile and a half in 3min 35sec or better. On the second day the Westport Trotting Club Handicap carries a stake of £2OO, and is for 4min 50sec class two mile horses. Coming as it does just before a number of other West Coast meetings the Westport fixture should draw a fair measure of support. Nominations will close with Mr F. Clark, the secretary, at 9 p.m. on Saturday next. A Good Effort

Panquitch showed an outstanding performance in winning the Mayfield Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, for although he was not very quick away from the barrier, he made a well-sustained run from the half mile post, and with a big field to pass he had to cover some extra ground. He was giving away time to get into the race and the win will bring a heavy handicap penalty. However, a substantial dividend would possibly be a sufficient reward for the penalty earned. Timaru T.C.

The programme for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on January 16, has been issued, and the principal race, the President's Handicap, will carry a stake of £275, and the class has been fixed at 4min 34sec. The total stakes to be given amount to £ll6O. In Form

Labourman went a good race in the Melrose Handicap at Ashburton _ and may have to be considered for his engagements at Hororata on December 12. Inter-Dominion Championships The South Australian Centenary trotting programme at Wayville promises to be one of the most outstanding seen in Australia. It is the second interDominion trotting championship to be held in Australia, the prize money for which will run into £4250. The programme is extended over four nights, that is, from January 27 to February 6. On the first night the interDominion championship, of one mile and a quarter, for £750, the scratch mark of which is 2min 12sec to the mile, will take place. On the second night £9OO is the amount of the stake for one mile and a half championship, the scratch mark of which is 2min Msec. The third night is £IOOO for two miles, the scratch mark being 2min ISsec. The final night race will be one of £I6OO, with a gold cup and sash, over a distance of one mile and a half, the scratch mark being 2min 15sec. The points system which was adopted in the last championship at Perth, will be used, that is three points for first, two points for second, and one for third, while three, two, and one points will be awarded to the three horses recording the fastest times. No points are allocated for the grand final. For the grand final which will be provisionally limited to nine, the committee retain the power to increase the number to a maximum of 11. Further particulars can be obtained from the controlling body of Trotting Associations. With 60 horses nominated the fields are likely to be unwieldy and the different events will have to‘ be run in divisions, making a very full programme for any club to control. New Zealand will have its fair representation with the six horses that have been nominated. The nomination of Indianapolis, Roi TOr, Tempest, and Cloudy Range was anticipated, but some surprise would be caused by the inclusion of Nervie’s Last and Southern Smile. Both horses, however, will be very nicely placed for Nervie’s Last is assessed at 2min 12sec, 2min 41sec, and 4min 33sec, while Southern Smile is on 2min 13sec, 2min 47sec, and 4min 33sec.

REASSESSMENTS Placed horses at the Forbury Park and Ashburton County Racing Clubs’ meetings have been reassessed as follows:

Time, Imin 42 3-ssec. notes on the racing (THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, November 30. tap Up Again Successful ’ In spite of a rise of 101b, Lap Up repeated his first day’s success in the Kawau Hurdles, for which Merry Lap and Dark Marble were heavily- supported. Lap Up went to the front about five furlongs from home and was never afterwards headed, although Merry Lap made a determined bid to overtake him in the straight. Merry Lap was very patiently ridden by R. E. Thomson, but Lap Up proved superior on the day. Kanapa ran one of his best races, always being handily placed and fighting on well at the end. Dark Marble was just behind the placed horses when he fell at the last fence. Valamito Makes Amends

After running unluckily on a number of occasions, the each way favourite. Valamito, scored a decisive victory in the Vauxhall Handicap from the second fancy. King Neptune, who was having his first race.. Valamito was handy behind the leaders. King Neptune, Morning Sun, and Huntsman’s Chorus, and he ran on too well for the less seasoned King Neptune. Valamito is a long-striding three-year-old, and now that he has opened his winning account he may not be long in scoring again. King Neptune, a half-brother by Tidal to King March and Gay Marigold, made a very promising showing, and his turn should come when he Is more experienced. Salva ran on solidly at the end to get third and pay a god price for a place. Strathire, Morning Sun, and Lone Filer did best of the others. Long Overdue

The four-year-old Fleetwlnd scored a long overdue victory In the Cautley Handicap, her first since she was a two-year-old. Fleetwlnd was only fifth in demand on both totallsators, and returned double figures for a win. She was close up at

the straight entrance behind Square Acre. Paso Robles, Royal Passage, and Winlona, and she stayed too well for Square Acre at the end. Finishing very resolutely on the rails, Square Acre ran his best race for some time, and is evidently on the improve. Gay Egypt made another good showing for third, and he may have been closer only for losing his position at the five furlongs, where Ebb and Flow also lost some ground. The Favourite Wins

The King Rey-Tradesman bracket was made favourite for the St. Andrew’s Handicap, and the former ran right up to form to win from Mazir. The top-weight, Namakia, who claimed a 51b apprentices' allowance, carried the field along at a very fast pace, running the first five furlongs in Imin 1 l-ssec, but Knight of Australia never allowed her to get far away and he was the first to tackle her in the straight. Then Armacourt made a dash and King Rey and Mazir also made efforts. King Rey came through in good style and scored from Mazir, who finished resolutely on the outside. Mazir was a shade unlucky, as he lost some valuable ground when Kelly went back at the five furlongs. Armacourt ran a fine race for third, and Wait and See came from a long way back. Crooning made a very creditable showing, find High Tea was closer at the finish than at any other stage. A Good Price Finishing with plenty of dash. Nuclei scored at a good price on the win machine in the Rakino Handicap, for which Privy Seal was an each-way favourite. Nuclei was always fairly handy, and she outstayed the top-weight, Bachelor King, after he had gone very fast early to reach the front from an outside position. Inside the distance Bachelor King appeared likely to win, but his weight told near the end. Highborn made a promising showing for third, although he failed to finish quite as well as expected. Elanage again shaped creditably, finishing soundly on the outside. Privy Seal appeared to be squeezed when well up in the leading bunch near the post and she lost her rider. An Outsider An outsider. Sweet Rose, was responsible for a surprise in winning Die Pupukc Plate, paying over a quarter of a century on the straight-out machine. Sweet Bose led throughout the last, six furlongs, and she ran on very attractively when Kilonsa challenged in the straight. Kilonsn registered another line performance and ran the mile out well without being able to trouble seriously the winner, who was caught in her best form. Quadroon and Inver had a hard tussle for third, and the former just stayed the better. Inver was probably not entirely suited by the going. Impasto in Form On the strength of his victory on the first day Tybalt was made an each-way favourite for the Ngataringa Handicap, but he had to lower his colours to Impasto, who is in great form at present. The winner was assisted by jumping out brilliantly. and he ran on well under his weight at the finish, although he would have had a more difficult task if Tybalt had not been disappointed in the straight. Below the distance Tybalt attempted to get up on the Inside of Impasto and Johnny Walls, who were together in front, but he had to come to the outside. Once clear, he made a determined effort, but the task was just too great. Johnny Walls shaped well, and Princess Star was fourth after losing her position after going about a furlong. A Surprise Victory Recording his best performance to date, in a field that was by no means strong Spearcourt brought off a surprise in winning the Stanley Handicap in good style. Nicely ridden by C. G. Goulsbro, the winner was always handily placed, and at the turn he was just behind Philcmup, Student Prince, and King Tut, who had run up smartly on the outside. Below the distance Spearcourt came through on the rails and ran on very resolutely to win. King Tut and Loomblnation ran good races, and Philemup and Student Prince made bold showings but weakened near the end. JOCKEY SUSPENDED ALLEGED INTERFERENCE (TRUSS ASSOCIATION IELF.O RA M.) AUCKLAND, November 30. At the Takapuna Jockey Club’., meeting to-day tin enquiry was held into alleged interference to Adalone and Mainland in tbe Cheltenham Handicap on the first day, and after evidence had been heard to-day it was decided to suspend H. Wiggins, who rode Tybalt in the race, for three weeks for careless riding.

NOTES ON THE RACING I THE PRESS Special Service.l PALMERSTON N„ November 30. Reversal of Form A totally dilferent race on the part of Lord Hereford saw him beat the favourite. Beau Gallante, decisively in the hurdles. On Saturday Lord Hereford was always well back, but to-day he was never giving way to Beau Gallante. From the last fence home he was always the winner. Llmulus was a fair third, with Beau Star and Miss Hushabye next. The latter jumped very badly and Beau Star was giving away a lot of ground over most of the journey. The winner showed a striking reversal of form. A Mild Surprise Toorak mildly surprised by beating the favourite. The Bigot, in the Maidert. but he did it well, coming through with the favourite from behind the pacemakers, Alloa and Old Surrey, in the straight, and going on to win decisively. The Bigot just kept his head in front of En Vidette for second, the latter being denied an opening on the rails until too late. Mazzini who was going back several places at the half, came along on the outer again in the straight for a close fourth. A Close Finish The five runners in the St. Andrew’s Handicap provided a thrilling finish. Jubilee Song and Rona Bay made the running from Grand Jury, Davislock, and Gay Boy. Gay Boy moved up entering the straight, but Grand Jury went with him, so that he was four horses out. Rona Bay, Grand Jury, and Gay Boy fought out a desperate finish. Grand Jury winning by a short head from Rona Bay, with Gay Boy another head away, and Jubilee Song fourth. The winner, who counts his age now in double figures, had his first success since last January. He appreciated the conditions of the track and was also ridden an excellent race by Atkins. Rona Bay ran to her best form and nearly succeeded, and had Gay Boy been moved up handier early when the pace was slow he must have won. Warm Favourite Beaten With track conditions as they were Mother Superior was a solid favourite for the sprint, but she ran below her first day s form and was never going well. Karl led with Farmer from Mother Superior and Mata Hari. the latter having begun slowly. Mother Superior dropped back on the turn and Karl led into the straight from Farmer and Mata Hari. The latter challenged strongly, but Karl fought on to win all out by a neck. Bodyline was a poor third, just getting up on the post from Farmer. Karl had nothing to spare and had to put up a solid effort, while he also appeared hampered by the going. An Easy Win Greenwich revealed her real form to win the Nursery in hollow style. She jumped away brilliantly and soon put a break on the others, who were headed by Wildflower, Laughing Chief, Gay Molly, and Tipsy Miss. Greenwich ran home the easiest of winners, but Wildflower was all out to hold off Laughing Chief. There was a big gap to the bunch headed by Lady Montana. Greenwich outclassed her opponents. Ingenuity Wins King’s Lancer, the favourite for the Rongotea Hack Handicap, was handy in the running, but was beaten on the turn, being unable to act well in the going. Up to that stage Cloudy Bay. Charmode, Hatuma, and King’s Lancer, with Ingenuity. then swept round the field and soon put a big break on the rest. The last-named ran home an easy winner by several lengths from Master Limond, who, aided by a good run through on the

fence, and acting well in the ground, came right from the rear of the field to heat Charade for second money. Ingenuity gave none of her opponents a look in at the finish. The Favourite Fails

Brazen King scored at a good price in the Nikau Handicap from another outsider in Prevail. This pair ran together in behind the leaders. Great Hope and Black Thread. Black Thread soon stopped, hut Great Hope ran on well. Prevail and Brazen King, however, gradually wore him down and Brazen King won going away, Prevail just heading Great Hope. Then came Kindheart, Erebus, Sanhedrin, and The Buzzer. Kindheart finished very strongly from a long way back. A Narrow Victory

Lowenberg, again fairly slow away in the concluding event, finished with a very solid run in the straight to cut out the pacemaker, Royal Secret, on the post. Alchemic and Hunting Lodge went with Royal Secret to the straight and then retired, Blue Garter being a fair third and Lord Moutoa fourth. The winner put up a very solid performance.

DEATH OF SYDNEY RIDER IN INDIA SYDNEY, November 30. Advice has been received of the death at Bombay on Saturday of the well-known JSydnejv jockey, J. Donkin, who left for India recently with three other Sydney riders. Donkin, who was 29, died from an abscess on the brain.

Eldersfield Church, near Gloucester, has a new clock, for which it has to thank one of its bellringers. Mr J. Carter is only a bellringer on Sundays and special occasions. On week days he is a wheelwright, and he has made this clock out of the odds and ends of his trade. He took three wheels from an old winnowing machine, two driv-ing-wheels from bicycles, an ironrimmed skittle ball for the pendulums the steel from a blacksmith’s bellows for two discs, and he hammered some old brass into a skeleton pattern for the face and the hands. These and a few other oddments now make a fine clock for the village
