NEW BRIGHTON CLUB

ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT HELD The New Brighton Amateur Athletic Club was unfortunate for the third year in succession in having very b “ d for its annual smoke concert on Satutdaj evening. The president, Mr A. I. Hughes presided, and he was supported by the natron Mr L. C. Matson, the former secretary’(Mr T Hulme), and Mr W. Queree. In proposing the toast of the cub Mr J. Sands said that he regretted that the parents ot children competing at the club s meetings did not show sufficient interest in the club to support it by being present that evening. „ Replying, Mr J. G. Hay apologised for the absence of the club captain, Mr L. C. Richards, and said the club did its best to entertain and help the youth of the village as well as to improve its physique. There was most promising material in the club this year. The junior and secondary school members would bring credit to the name of the club. ... “The Centre, Canterbury Amateur Athletic Association.” was proposed by the club secretary, Mr A. C. Boyd. Replying. Mr A. I. Hughes said that the centre had appreciated the spirit shown by the club when it had oilered the use of its sports ground for a meeting when the Lancaster Park Board of Control would not grant an afternoon. The result had been a record attendance of athletes in New Brighton for the occasion. The view of the centre was that New’ Brighton was a fine club. , , Mr W. Ellis said that the residents of the borough appreciated the efforts of the club for the younger members of the community, and as a resident for 38 years he wished to tender his thanks for the valuable work the club was doing for the advancement of sport. The toast “Kindred Clubs” tvas proposed by the treasurer, Mr R. T. Marriott, and Mr' L. C. Matson replied. The toast of the artists and press was proposed by Mr R. A. Lowre.

Communi!;.’ singing and items by Messrs A. Wakefield, C. Dorn, and N. Waghorn contributed to the success of the entertainment.

During the evening Mr Hughes was presented with a handsome bracket clock in honour of his recent marriage.
