NEW BRIGHTON BAND HONOURED

INSPEC TION OF NEW UNIFORMS An inspection of the New Brighton Municipal Band in the new uniforms, was made by the Mayor (Mr E. L. Smith), and members of the New Brighton Borough Council yesterday afternoon. After a display of drill and the inspection, which was made in the Municipal Band Hall, members, and others connected with the band were the guests of the Mayor and Mayoress at afternoon tea.

The guests of honour included the member of Parliament for the district (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan), and Mrs Sullivan, the Deputy-Mayor and Deputy-Mayoress (Dr. and Mrs W. T. Glasgow), the Town Clerk, Mr C. T. Middleton, and Mrs Middleton, and Conductor J. A. Nuttall, and Mrs Nuttall.

Extending a welcome to the guests, Mr Smith paid a high compliment to the bandsmen upon their appearance. The Hon. D. G. Sullivan congratulated the band upon the status it had reached. He had been proud of the appearance of the members when he had inspected them at the Riccarton races. Bands had played a great part in social and community life, but he thought that in future with the increased leisure which the 40-hour week had brought, the bands would play a still greater part. All through its history, the city of Christchurch had held a reputation for a love of cultural things, and the need for music and other arts that led to a cultured life. It was fitting that the Municipal Band should be re-equipped to meet the new conditions.

Referring to the remarks of the Mayor, Conductor Nuttall said that although it would not be the wish of the members that he should make such a statement, he could say that there was not another band in New Zealand that had done as much for charity as the New Brighton Municipal Band. Other speakers were Dr. Glasgow, Cr. A. W. Owles (a life member of the band, and a former president), Mr J. H. Coddington (secretary), and the Town Clerk-Treasurer respectively of the holiday fair held to raise funds for the band uniforms.
