BAND CONTEST AT GORE

WINNER TWICE DISQUALIFIED (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) INVERCARGILL, November 15. Rain marred the annual contest of the Otago and Southland B and C Grade Brass and Pipe Bands Association, held at Gore yesterday. Nevertheless, there was a good attendance of the public, and

the programme was carried through successfully. In the B grade, Gore Municipal scooped the pool, securing highest points in the quickstep and test selection, but was disqualified because of a breach of the regulations in replacing a deceased player with an A grade bandsman. In each case the second band, Green Island, was placed first. Mr R. J. Estall (Christchurch), the musical judge, expressed pleasure at the good standard of playing in the B and C grade test selections, although he was disappointed with the playing in the quickstep. Results: — B Grade Quickstep—Gore Municipal 293J (disqualified). Green Island 277 i, Mosgiel 261, Dunedin Artillery 2521, Otago Mounted Rifles 249 J. Green Island was placed first. C Grade Quickstep—St. Joseph’s Orphanage (Dunedin) 2743, West Harbour 2631, Port Chalmers 2421, Tapanui 1971.

Pipe Band Quickstep—Caledonian of Southland (Invercargill) 1761, John McGlashan (Dunedin) 1612, North Otago 158, Gore 155|, Taieri 145 J. B Grade Brass Selection—Gore 134 (disqualified), Green Island 128, Otago Mounted Rifles and Mosgiel 127 (equal), Dunedin Artillery 126. Green Island was placed first. C Grade Selection—St. Joseph’s Orphanage 125, Port Chalmers (disqualified) 123, West Harbour 122, Tapanui 106. Pipe Band Selection—Caledonian of Southland 81. Gore 76, Taieri 64. Mataura 60, John McGlashan 59, North Otago 59. The John McGlashan Gold Challenge Shield, for the aggregate in music and drill, and the Collie Memorial Challenge Cup, for the aggregate in music only, were both won by Caledonian of Southland.
