NEW SCHOOL AT WESTPORT

PROPOSAL MADE BY COMMITTEE

SITE IN BROUGHAM STREET SUGGESTED

The need for a new primary school at Westport was stressed at the last meeting of the school committee and a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs W. Hart, F. Knight, T. Parfltt, and J. Harris, was set up to report on the matter. Members said that the present buildings were unsuitable from a health point of view and Mr Hart expressed the opinion that the Minister for Health would agree with this view. Mention was made of a section m Brougham street as a suitable site for the new school.

WESTPORT GOLF CLUB

PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES FOR SEASON The official closing day of the Westport Golf Club for the season was held on the Kawatiri links yesterday. Addressing members before the presentation of trophies, the president, Mr G. D. Campbell, said that the club had had a very successful year and made special mention of the retention of the Dalgleish Shield for competition among West Coast clubs. Mr Campbell said that it was hoped to have a new pavilion built for next season. He said that a high standard of golf had been maintained in the men’s section, but he would like to see an increased membership and more cohesion in the women’s section. The following trophies won during the year were presented by the president; —Women’s championship: Miss Elva Slee; runner-up, Mrs J. Bird. Junior championship: Miss Tully; run-ner-up, Miss J. Robertson: men’s senior championship, G. F. Hogg; runner-up, W. Phipps. Intermediate championship: R. Nottel; runner-up, D. F. Fountaine. Junior: J. Newman; runner-up, T. Phipps. The trophy presented for the best performance during the year was won by C. F. Shadick with a gross 7G. The women’s one-club match was won by Mrs O. L. Nahr. The men’s four-a-side one-club handicap played in the morning was won by C. F. Shadick, A. A. Wilson, W. A. Smith, and’ A. M. Neill. A similar match in the afternoon was won by G. D. Campbell, H. Lockey, C. Jones, and D. J. Fountaine. The men's approaching competition was won by A. Nottle. WESTPORT PERSONAL NOTES Dr. and Mrs lan Thompson have arrived at Westport, where Dr. Thompson will begin practice. Mr Jim Bradley will leave Westport soon to take up a position with the Railway Department at Christchurch. fie was met by members of the St. Andrew’s Bible Class, when the Rev. S. W. Webber, for the students, presented Mr Bradley with a leather suitcase.

CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL PROPOSED

CHILDREN’S WARD WANTED \T HOKITIKA It has been decided to organise a Christmas carnival in Hokitika at Christmas to raise funds to assist the establishment of a children’s ward in the Westland Hospital. A -iublic meeting will be held this week. METHODIST CHURCH FAIR AT HOKITIKA The bungalow fair held in the St. Andrew’s Hall in aid of the Hokitika Methodist Church funds was very successful. The hall was arranged to represent a six-roomed bungalow, comprising drawing, dining, bath, and bedrooms, kitchen and pantry. The various stalls were well patronised and the furnishings were sold. Those who assisted at the stalls were Mesdames Allan Carr, Oliver. W. F. Ashley, Lowther, George Perry, H. Lawn, S. King, W. Bone, G. Gilchrist, T. W. Duff, Eggeling. Mycroft, and V/. Perry, and Misses E. Perry. L. Berendt, Lawrence, A. and R. Lawn, and E. Cooke. In the evening, elocutionary, vocal, and dancing competitions were held. At the conclusion, goods and articles were auctioned by Mr D. Friedlandcr. HOKITIKA GOLF CLUB’S CUP The cup presented by Dr. B. L. Wilson for the best putting aggregate competition for members of the Holduisa Golf Club has been won by Mr R. Cox. The Hokitika office of tiie Lands and Survey Department will observe a five-day week beginning to-day. The hours in future will be from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4.35 p.m., with lunch hour from 1 to 2 p.m. The staff will thus be working the same number of hours a week as at present.

WEST COAST TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

DATES FOR 1937 APPLIED FOR The management committee of the Westland Tennis Sub-Association, at its meeting this week, decided to apply to the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association for January 27 to January 30, 1937, as dates for the West Coast championships, which will be held at Hokitika. REEFTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL PICNIC ON FEBRUARY 3 The Reelton District High School Committee met with Mr J. Patterson presiding. The headmaster, Mr Kayes, reported that the average attendance for the month was 156 in the primary department and 30 in the secondary department. The resignation of Mr W. B. Auld, as chairman of the committee, was received. Members expressed regret that ill-health had compelled Mr Auld to forward his resignation. It was resolved that a minute of appreciation be recorded expressing the thanks of the members for the untiring work of Mr Auld over a long period. JVIr Patterson was appointed chairman. The annual excursion was considered, and it was decided to hold it at Greymouth on February 3, the secre-. tary was authorised to attend to preliminary arrangements. Mrs Mitchell forwarded her resignation as caretaker of the school, which was received with extreme regret. Messrs Potter and Cleaver were appointed a visiting committee for the month. Personal Mr K. B. Auld, of the staff of the National Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, is spending annual leave in Reefton with his parents, Mr and Mrs W. B. Auld. Mr C. J. Willis, who has been in Canterbury for Carnival Week, has returned home. BISHOP OF NELSON VISITS REEFTON A good congregation attended evensong at St. Stephen’s Church, Reefton, when the Bishop of Nelson conducted the service. ■ Afterward the congregation adjourned to the Parish Hall, where a social hour was held and the bishop was given the opportunity of meeting the congregation. He left, for Greymouth on. Saturday morning.
