NEW ZEALAND BUTTER IN ENGLAND
PURPOSE OF MR NASH’S VISIT v EXTENSION OF MARKETS SOUGHT LONDON, November 10. The New Zealand Minister for Finance (the Hon. W. Nash), interviewed by the Associated Press in London, emphasised that he was chiefly concerned with extending the markets for New Zealand products, especially butter. Britain’s consumption of butter could be increased 50 per cent, without reaching the “human needs’’ standard approved by the nutrition experts." He hoped it would be marketable in England above 112 s per cwt, but if this were impossible, the Government would take care of the New Zealand farmers.
The first charge on the credits obtained from the sale of New Zealand products would be overseas debt services. Mr Nash indicated that he would be seeing city financiers, but he was not demanding conversion. He would probably consult members of the Government and shipping authorities if the question of a subsidy arose after the publication of the McKinder report. New Zealand would be prepared to agree to a subsidy for Pacific shipping if terms could be arranged suitable to all parties. He believed that there was room for English and American shipping in the Pacific side by side.
