TRAMWAY BOARD ELECTION

♦ NOMINATIONS CLOSED NINETEEN CANDIDATES FOR NINE SEATS Nineteen nominations have been received for the nine seats on the Christchurch Tramway Board. Only eight seats, however, will be contested in the election, which will be held on November 26, for only one nomination has been received by the returning officer (Mr H. E. Jarman) for the Avon subdistrict, and Mr W. J. Walter has been declared elected. Mr Walter, who is the sitting member, is an independent. Nominations closed at noon yesterday. The six central sub-district seats will be contested by 14 candidates, six of them standing in the interests of the Labour party, six for the Citizens’ Association, and the remaining two as Independents, There will be two candidates for the Heathcote sub-district, and two for the Riccarton sub-district. The candidates and the party they represent are as follows, an asterisk in front of a name indicating a sitting member of the board: — Central Sub-district (Six members to be elected) Berthold Ahlfeld (Independent), Ernest Herbert Andrews (Citizens). •John Kendrick Archer (Labour). Harold Ernest Denton (Labour). Frederick Willie Freeman (Citizens). Edwin Henry Staples Hamilton (Citizens). William Hayward (Citizens). • ‘Robert Mafeking Macfarlane (Labour). •George Manning (Labour). Seton Fulton Marshall (Citizens). •John Mathison (Labour). Frederick Mitton (Independent). •Edward Parlane (Labour). David Edwin Parton (Citizens). Heathcote Sub-district (One member to be elected) James Stevenson Barr (Labour). Frank Thompson (Independent). Riccarton Sub-district (One member to be elected) Archibald Albany McLachlan (Independent). •George Thomas Thurston (Labour). Two present members of the board —Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., one of the Labour representatives for the central sub-district, and the Rev. F. T. Read Association)—are not gontesting the election.
