WELLINGTON, October 8.

A total additional state expenditure Of £1,718,289 is provided for in the supplementary estimates, which were tabled in the House of Representatives to-day. The detailed totals are:—

Under the heading of permanent charges, a sum of £IOOO is set aside fcr the salaries of judges appointed imder the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Act.

As in many other departmental accounts, the vote for the Land and Income Tax Department includes additional amounts required because of increased work brought about by the new legislation. There is a sum of £2350 for the appointment of 12 additional inspectors, and another sum of £1570 to cover alterations, additional equipment, etc., as well as an amount of £7OO for additional overtime and meal allowances for work which will be necessary through amendments to the Land and Income Tax Act ~

The estimates for the Department of Internal Affairs include a sum of £ 500 for initial expenses in the establishment of a game farm at Rotorua. The same estimates provide lor grants of £SOO to cover the cost of the transfer of the High Commissioner from New Zealand to England, and a special retiring allowance of £IOOO to the former High Commissioner (Sir James Parr) on account of his early retirement. A grant of £3OO is made for alterations to the Turnbull Library, necessary because of the acquisition of the Kinsey Library. Visit of J. E. Lovelock The projected visit of Mr J. E. Lovelock to New Zealand as the guest of the Government is covered by a grant of £175. There is an item of £35 for a wedding gift to the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. There is a grant of ££oo to provide for the control by the Government of fresh-water fisheries research.' This will be Offset by increased revenue. The estimates for the Department of Labour provide for additional staff required because of the passing of the Agriculture ’orkers Act, including three inspectors. Additional amounts totalling £3BOO have been set aside to cover the cost of Conciliation Council proceedings, and a sum of £1764 covers the wages of 13 non-permanent workers appointed for the placement scheme. A - sum of £22,857 covers the salaries of additional clerical assistants employed by the bureau, and the cost of the restoration of salaries to the 1931 level. There is only one item in the Electoral Department’s •-estimates, this being £SOO voted to cover the expenses of representation commissions engaged in the readjustment of electoral bom daries, following automatically on the 1030 census. The Defence Department’s supplementary vote for aviation includes £IO,OOO for the extension of the Hobsonvllle Aerodrome; £SOOO to supplement the Public Works vote for the levelling and development of civil aerodromes and emergency landing grounds; and £ 1200 to provide weather reports for civil and commercial aircraft on Sundays and holidays. An interesting item in the Department of Lands and Survey estimates is a vote of £SO for experiments with the marketing of wild-pig skins. Subsidies granted include £SOO for the Karamea Shipping Company to assist its service in the Karamea district, and. £BOO, representing the department’s share of the total cost of £4600 involved in Waitaki river protection work. Subsidies for Rabbit Boards * In the estimates for the Department of Agriculture, £4250 is provided for additional subsidies to rabbit boards, partly necessary because of the formation of new boards. There is also a vote of £41,000 for the eradication of ragwort. A sum. of £3OOO is provided for additional payments to the Dairy Board for herd-testing, and £IOO to assist the Central Taranaki Veterinary Club. • Tn the estimates for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research there is a vote of £ 500 for additional laboratory equipment for wheat research, to be paid for from the wheat *7. ' Recent developments in transport control account for new votes. In the Transport Department’s estimates £SOO as set aside for the expenses of the National Safety Council, and £ 1000 for the enquiry at present taking place into the operation of goods and taxi services.

Ths estimates of the Health Department set aside £3OO to cover the expenses of the committee of enquiry set up to investigate the incidence of septic abortion. There is an additional vcte of £SOO for medical research ■work. In a note on this vote it is stated that, recognising the desirability of assisting scientific research into disease causation, it is proposed to establish a permanent cdvisory committee of medical research.

Provision for payments to additional staff amounting to £31.300 is made in the estimates of the Mental Hospitals Department, and it is stated that this covers the introduction of reduced working hours.

ft is stated in a note to the estimates f'f the Education Department that it is proposed to appoir/ a head oxfice senior inspector to facilitate the work of the Chief Inspector of Primary Schools.

In the estimates of the Pensions Department an additional amount of £1683 is required to cover salaries for increases in s'cJf, consequent cn new legislation. The further increase of 2s 6d a week in old-age pensions payable from December 1. 1938, is covered by a grant of £123,000. A departmental vote for public works amounting to £20,000 covers the cost of additional staff. Road expenditure chargeable on the Public Works Fund includes the following:— £ Lewis Pass road (Inangahua Section) .. .. 23,000 (additional) iCain South road, Bruce Bay to Haast, 12,300 Lewis Pass road (Amur! section) 28,000 (additional) JMakarora to Haasi road 12,500 (addi- , tional) The total supplementary expenditure fen roads is £250,000.
