LEAD FIGURES FOR GARDENS

GIFT OF MR B. E

M’DOUGALL

Five lead ornamental garden figures, which have been presented to H the Botanic Gardens by Mr R. E/ McDougall have now arrived from England, and it is hoped to have them mounted on pedestals in the rose garden before Carnival Week. The figures are about two feet three inches high, and the pedestals on which they are to be mounted will be about two feet. Four of the figures represent the four seasons, and the fifth, which will be placed in the central pool in the rose garden, is the well-known figure, the boy and the dolphin. The curator, Mr J. A. McPherson, said that the lead statues would give a restful effect to the garden, and in a few years, when they would have the backing of a yew hedge, they would look even better. Two jarrah seats have been presented for the gardens by Mrs S. C. Bingham, and six seats have been presented by members of the Canterbury Builders’ Association.

Silverstone was not one of the best men procurable for the position It was a mistake for the Minister to introduce a clause to put him on side.

“I am informed that this man is a communist, and I want to know whether that is so or not?”, said the Hon. J. G. Cobbe (Nat., Oroua). “A communist is a born traitor; and if this man is one it is the duty Of the House to vote out the clause. I am also informed that during the war, when toe Empire was struggling for its very existence, this man went around Dunedin endeavouring to prevent young men from enlisting. I would like to know whether that statement is correct.”
