GEORGE BEATS PENCHEFF

UNEVENTFUL BOUT

In a bout which aroused little, enthusiasm in the fairly large audience at the Theatre Royal last evening, Sd Don George (United States) defeated George Penchefl (Uhited States) by two falls to one, the deciding fall being obtained in the seventh round. George, who is a former world champion, and reputed still to be in championship class, was not extended by Pencheh, who. clever exponent of holds and amusing showman though he is had not the weight or strength to worry his opponent. George’s weight was announced as 18st 61b, and Ponchexi's as ISst 51b. new wrestler in New Zealand is weighed in the balance as a possible conqueror ot Karl McCready. and George gave evidence last evening that he will at least prove a worthy opponent for the Canadian. Right at the start of the bout George exploited a very fine hold —a head scissors with the arms, and Pencheff was caused much pain and anxiety before he broke clear. George showed great strength in breaking an Indian death-lock into which Pencheff Just failed to get the necessary leverage and George worked for a long time on a nasty barred toe hold, lie dived for the same leg after the Interval had interrupted proceedings, emerged With the wrong one, but again caused Pencheff more than a little trouble. Pencheff held George in a short-arm scissors for nearly half the third round, and then worked on a hammer-lock. Pencheff was the less effective in an exchange of jolts in the fourth round, and George followed up his advantage with dumps and a press for the first fail. Pencheff equalised in the next round after he had again Just failed to complete an Indian death-lock. He secured another short-arm scissors, and after a brief bouncing about the ring in the hold George submitted. George did most of the attacking in the sixth round, applying hammer-locks, head-locks, and a rocking chair splits in quick succession. Pencheff had his turn With an arm bar and later a crucifix. After even exchanges in the seventh round Penchefl secured a double leg hold—a promising position for a Boston crab—but elected to try to spin George. The dump was ineffective, and George replied with a flying tackle, pressing his opponent without difficulty. Amateur Preliminaries The amateur preliminaries, wrestled over three five-minute rounds, resulted as follows: — S. G. Pagan <Bst 41b) defeated E. Ballocb (Bst 71b) by one fall. J. A. Mclnnes (9st 71b) defeated J. Balloch (9st 61b) by two straight falls. T. S. Kennedy <7st 71b) defeated J. Lang (7st 121b) on points. _ „ , H. Wilson (list 31b) defeated J. W. Duke (list 121b) by two straight falls. The referee for the professional and the amateur bouts was Mr Gordon Mowat.
