CITY MILK SUPPLY
TO THE EDITOB OF THE PRESS. Sir, —A letter of considerable importance to the consumer and dairyman alike on the city milk supply appeared in your issue to-day. For some time past meetings of dairymen have been held to endeavour to arrive at. some working basis to bring about improvements in their industry, and a large number of dairymen have joined the different associations. The actual proposals that have been submitted to the milk committee of the Christchurch City Council are known only to a few. I am given to understand that even some of the council’s own committee, have not seen them. On a matter of such vital importance those interested should have received a copy. One can only come to the conclusion that there is something to hide. The main point raised by your correspondent concerns the producer-ven-dor. the owner of land in and near the city, also the consumers’ supply of fresh raw milk at an economical p'rice. It is the duty of the milk committee of the City Council to ascertain whether the proposals submitted to them cover these points, that is to say. whether provision is made for the pro-ducer-vendors’ representation or defining what a producer-vendor actually represents. And further, as far as the consumer is concerned, it should be laid down what is actually expected of dairymen in the delivery of what is termed fresh raw milk. If some such provisions are not in the proposals it would be better for the council to either throw them out, or refer them back to the dairymen for further consideration. At the same time the council should fully publish any proposals that have been submitted to them. —Yours, etc., H BLISS Heathcote, October 6. 1936. [Councillor T. Andrews, chairman of the milk committee of the Christchurch City Council, when this letter was referred to him, said that the reserves and milk committee had considered the proposals of the Dairymen's Association, which would come before the full meeting of the council next Monday night, when authority would be asked from the council to establish a milk board or some other form of control.]
