NOTES ON THE RACING

Redolent Wins Redolent had a decisive win in the Spring Hurdles. Golden Lap acted as pacemaker for the greater part of the journey and had a useful lead to the last fence from Santoft, Wexford Bridge, Redolent, and Polydora, all in fairly close order. Redolent made a fast run through on the rails when the run home was commenced and he soon had Golden Lap’s measure, going on to win without pressure. Polydora was a fair third only a neck in front of Wexford Bridge, with Santoft close up. Chrysology fell over the wing of the first fence and Royal Pal, when going well just behind the leaders, crashed five furlongs from home. Aninimi Wind’s Success Thermidor was the early leader in the Trial Handicap, but he commenced

to weaken three furlongs from home and Gold Boa, then taking charge, led into' the straight from Autumn Wind, Rodeur, Thermidor, and La France. Autumn Wind tackled Gold Boa inside the distance and after a short struggle gradually drew out to win comfortably by half a length. Rodeur was a good third two lengths in front of Thermidor, with Costume, Baltruin, and La France following. Never in Doubt Poniard accounted for the Mangatua Hack Handicap from barrier rise. He was three lengths in front of Vantoon rounding the home turn and into the straight, with Jack Ahoy and Recollection next. Poniard’s position was not challenged in the run home, while Vantoon had to be ridden out to hold off Jack Ahoy and Recollection. Illora and Braw Lad were next. Impressive Success.

Paper Slipper made an auspicious opening of his three-year-old career by winning the Electric Handicap in an impressive manner. Pelmet was the first to show out, but was soon joined by Paper Slipper, the pair leading into the straight from Capital and Wild Career. Pelmet dropped out early in the run home, and Capital essayed a challenge to Paper Slipper, who, however, was able easily to hold his advantage. Greek Gold, who was at the tail of the field for half the journey, finished well in third place from Pelmet. Bay Duke was last. The Surgeon Returns

Travenna was a good favourite for the Mosgiel Handicap, and endeavoured to win from end to end, but after, having a substantial lead along the back from The Surgeon and Tauramai, he commenced to tire, and although still clear of The Surgeon entering the straight, the latter easily outsayed him in the run home. Toreador was a fair third, with a gap of 10 lengths to Golden King, with Tauramai tailing off.

The Juvenile Classic

Card Player was a much- better favourite than Atalanta Lass for the McLean Stakes, none of the others being seriously considered. Forecast was first to break the line, Heidelberg being left at the post. Atalanta Lass was in front at the end of a furlong from Lord Nuffield, Triple Cone, and Card Player, and led into the straight clear of Card Player, Triple Cone, Lord Nuffield, and Auctor. Card Player had Atalanta Lass’s measure at the distance, and ran home a comfortable winner. Auctor finished well in third place nearly two lengths in front of Camerino. Lazybones, Forecast, and Lord Nuffield were next.

October Handicap Viking acted 'as the early pacemaker in tha October Handicap, but retired rounding the home turn, and Darinj Deed led into the straight from Queen Dorothy and Double Shot. Daring Deed was done with at the distance, and the final struggle was confined to Queen Dorothy and Double Shot. Queen Dorothy imished full of running to record another creditable win from Double Shot, who easily accounted for Daring Deed. Royal Gallant was 10 lengths away, and Viking last.

Win for Guineas Candidate

Matoru was confidently supported to win the Taioma Handicap, but he was well defeated by Stolen March. The latter was alwc j well placed, and followed Araboa and Paladino into the straight, with Matoru handy. Stolen March assumed command early in the run home, and although Matoru made a game effort under his big impost, he was not able to make much impression on the young Nightmarch gelding, who had something in reserve at the finish. Top Notch came from a rear position to get third money from Araboa. Epic was never prominent.
