CIVIL AVIATION
“BRITAIN TERRIBLY BEHIND”
MR C. W. A. SCOTT’S VIEW
(TOTTED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPTRIGHT.)
(Received October 7, -11.5 p.m.)
JOHANNESBURG, October 6
Mr C. W. A. Scott, speaking at a luncheon, expressed regret that the recent air race was not for international competitors. He said he might have accomplished something better for Britain if the race had been open to all nations.
It was all very well to say that a British aeroplane had reached the Rand in a certain time, but other countries might now say that they could have eliminated British aircraft. It would have given British aviation a greater fillip, even if a non-Britisher had won # “Britain is terribly behind in commercial aviation,” he said. “If there is another race, for heaven’s sake make it intexmational.” Mr I. W. Schlesinger, who gave the prizes for the race, said he intended to investigate Mr Scott’s suggestion.
