MEETING OF SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL

' SUBSIDY FOE PROTECTIVE WORKS : GRANTED

The monthly meeting of the Selwyn County Council was attended by Crs. W. Gilmour (chairman), E.* A* Duncan, G. H. Grigg, K. W. J. Hall. T. D. Jarman, R. H. Johnston, and W> Stone, A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr Joseph Hockridge, who had been a member of the council from its formation in 1911 until 1923. ■ The Commissioner of Transport wrote forwarding draft traffic regulations, for consideration and suggestions, and also a copy of amending regulations gazetted on September 10, for altering the speed limits of heavy motor-vehicles. It was decided to agree to a recommendation from the Transport Department that only highways be classified at present and that they be put in class 3. The South Islands Travel Association wrote advising that the Government had been asked to'include in the legislation passed this session a clause authorising local bodies to contribute to the funds of the association from their ordinary revenue. The Minister for Finance had replied saying that other organisations had requested similar powers, and that the matter would be deferred in the meantime and dealt with later in a comprehensive manner.

It was decided to write to the Ministers for Finance and for Internal Affairs, urging that the desired legislation be passed during the present session.

The District Highways Council forwarded a circular letter dealing with matters affecting main highways, and also advised that the Main Highways Board was prepared to subsidise protective works above the Bealey crossing on Main Highway 197, to the extent of £3OO, £1 for £l. The settlers concerned had agreed to find £2OO among them.

The council agreed to provide £IOO as its share for protection of the highway and of Bealey’s road.

COCKSFOOT SEED GROWERS ASSOCIATION

DEPUTATION APPOINTED TO VISIT MINISTER

A' meeting of the committee of the Akaroa Cocksfoot Seed Growers' Association was held at Duvauchelle, with Mr F. G. Armstrong, chairman, presiding. The fields superintendent of the Department of Agriculture attended the meeting and discussed the cocksfoot industry.

The chairman reported that recently several lines had been rejected because of an excess of ryegrass due to abnormal wet weather which induced a much greater growth. Mr McGillivray said this had caused a lot of trouble in the last season. The present standard of purity was that not more than 6 per cent, of any other seed could be allowed, and every precaution should be taken by growers to maintain that standard. It was decided to write to the Hon. W. Lee Martin (Minister for Agriculture) asking him to visit Akaroa if possible when the session was over, or to receive a deputation either in Wellington or Christchurch., The deputation was appointed as follows: Messrs F. G. Armstrong, C. W. Humm. W. H. Moore, T. Mould, and W. Jacobson. Educational Association There was a good attendance of members at the meeting of the Akaroa branch of the Workers’ Educational Association at the home of Miss K. McNab, Percy street. Akaroa. Misses T. Craig and E. Southgate were the hostesses, and entertained the members to supper. Miss Craig also being leader. Two plays, “The Little -i.an,” by John Galsworthy, and a , humorous one-act play, “Mr Hatton’s Prize,” by H, V. Purcell, were read with intgrest.

GREENDALE METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL

SIXTY-SECOND ANNIVERSARY

CELEBRATED

The sixty-second anniversary of the Greendale Methodist Sunday School was celebrated, there being good attendances at each of the three services, conducted by the Rev. *J. F. Jack, of Oamaru. The prizes were distributed at the afternoon service, and the children sang special hymns. On Monday a tea and a public meeting were held. The meeting was presided over by the superintendent of the Sunday School, Mr F. G. Early, and • satisfactory reports were presented by the secretary, Mr J. Rudd, and the treasurer, Mr J. J. W. Lamb. Items were given by the choir and scholars and speeches by the Revs. J. F. Jack and R. McGregor and Mr C. H. Adams.

GLENTUNNEL SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the Glentunnel School Committee was held with Mr G. D. Marsh presiding. The headmaster, Mr L. A. Marshall, reported that during the month the school was visited by Mr W. A. Service, senior inspector, and Mr W. H. Johnston, agricultural instructor. The present roll number was 71 (41 boys and 30 girls), one boy and one gin having been admitted. A cards match between Mount tJrey Downs and Saltwater Creek was held in the Mount Grey Downs schoolroom. The match resulted in Saltwater Creek winning by a small margin. . Aggregate prizes for the best six nights’ play were won by Mrs J. Rowe and Mr J. Shand. .

BROADFIELD TENNIS CLUB’S OPENING

The Broadfield Tennis Club opened its season in fine weather. The president, the Rev. C. H. in declaring the season open, wished the club success in matches for the coming season. Friendly games were played.
