TURF GOSSIP

Dominion Blood New Zealand blood was again to the fore in the Metropolitan Handicap at Kandwick on Monday. Young Crusader. the winner, is a four-year-old horse by Caledon from Bonnie Lady. Bonnie Lady, who is at Mr Percy Miller’s stud, is by Boniform from Portland Lass, by Bill of Portland—Aorere. by Chester. Bonnie Lady was bred by Mr I. G. Duncan. Portland Lass, however, originally came to New Zealand from Victoria, where she was bred. A Poor Record

Last season Polydora gained only one win on the flat, an unexpected one at Amberley, and only one in the previous season, at Washdyke. Actually she has won only once in this department for iust on two years, but after winning a nurdle race on the third day she finished fourth in the Metropolitan. Interest will thus attach to her effort over hurdles at Wingatui to-day. A Strong Candidate Fersen, before going to Ellerslie, was impressive in a gallop over a mile and a quarter the reverse way at New Plymouth, and the 2min 18 l-sssc he took for the distance was an indication that the Mitchelson Cup candidate is in great heart. Brillancy and Mowgli assisted Fersen in the early stages, and he was brought home the last half mile bv Eagle’s Eye in 55sec. Fersen finished full of running. A Good Reason

Few jockeys would voluntarily cancel a Royal engagement, and probably no other jockey in the world today has ever taken that step for such a reaspn as did Frank Sampson, an international. who rode his first winner in England last month. Sampson was retained to ride for the King of Rumania, but because he could not send any money out of the country to supEort his wife and family he severed is connexion with the Royal stable. Money No Object

Two enthusiastic women owners, Mrs Corlette, Glomey and Miss Dorothy Paget, were in keen competition for a yearling colt by Fairway out of Golden Hail at the Doncaster sales in England last month, and -the price given was a record for a yearling at public auction. Donald Snow, who was representing Miss Paget, had to outbid several prominent owners before he gained possession at 15.000 guineas. The colt was one of the consignment offered by Viscount Furness from the GilltQwn Stud. The first bid was the sensational one of 5000 guineas. Immediately the Earl of Rosebery raised it to 6000, and three people simultaneously bid 7000 guineas. Lord Glanely made an offer, and after bidding had leapt to 10,000 guineas, he went to 11,000. He thfen retired, leaving the field to»the two women, and the bidding went on to 14,000 guineas, offered by Miss Paget. Mrs Glomey waved her catalogue to signify 14,500. This was promptly answered with 15,000 guineas for Miss Paget, and the colt was knocked down to her. Miss Paget inherits her great fortune from her mother, formerly Miss Whitney, of New York. Viscount Furness had a wonderful sale, his 13 yearlings realising 37,710 guineas.

At Wingatui To-day The weather was fine but cloudy in Dunedin yesterday, and the indications last night were for a fine day for the racing at Wingatui. The track will be in excellent order, without being too firm. _ Polydqra will be ridden in her Dunedin engagements by D, O’Connor. There will be no bracketed horses on to-day’s card. La France and Rodeur were bracketed in the first place, but the latter has since been sold and will race in the colours of Mrs K. Oliver, of Fairfax, Southland. McLean Stakes Candidates Four of those carded for the McLean Stakes, at Wingatui to-day, made their first public appearances in the John -Grigg Stakes at Ashburton last month. These were. Card Player, by Paper Money; Heidelberg and Fairlight. by Lord Warden, and Triple Cone, by Rcsenor. Of the remainder in to-day’s race, Auctor is by Balboa from the English mare, Spean Bridge, and is held under lease from Mr A. Chisholm by D. P. Wilson. Forecast is by Weathervane from Some Rose, winner of the race in 1926, Lazybones is by Nigger Minstrel from Slack Line, the dam of Lady Primrose, who was a winner at the same age in Melbourne last spring for Mr W. R. Kemball. Lord Nuffield is by Straight Course from Attractive Lady, by Tractor. Mazamarch is bv N ; ~htmarch from Mazatuko, dam of Superex. Atalanta Lass is by Iliad from Entre Nous, dam of Guarantee, who won the race in 1932. Camerine is by Gustavo from Call Bird, owned by Mr L. C. Hazlett. Golden Flare hj by Gustavo from Artistic, by Leighton from Statuette. Triple Cone is from Silver Peak, the dam of Aspiring, who won the McLean Stakes in 1928. At Plemiiurton

According to a cable message from Melbourne yesterday. Bimilla galloped

in brillianf style for a mile, which occupied Imin sec. Homeward Bound A Sydney message says that Kinnoull. Rebel Lad, and Black Coat are returning to New Zealand by to-mor-row’s steamer. A Good Record New Zealand-bred horses have won the Australian Jockey Club Derby on nine occasions, namely, Nordenfeldt, by Musket; Bonnie Scotland, by St. George; Noctuiform, by Multiform; Kilboy, by Kilbroney; Cupidon, by Martian; Ballymena, by Nassau; Phar Lap, by Night Raid; Ammon Ra, by Limond; Theo, by Limond; and Homer, by Iliad, head-heater. In addition, New Zealand owners have won with Australian-bred horses on three occasions. Biplane, by Comedy King, and Gloaming, by The Welkin, won in successive years for the late Mr G. D. Greenwood, and Prince Humphrey, by Duke Humphrey, won for Mr C. G. Macindoe. Last Saturday’s race was won by a colt bred in Australia from a New Zealand-bred mare, and the second, third, and fourth horses were bred in the Dominion.

Royal Secret Scratched * Royal Secret was scratched at 12.20 p.m. yesterday for the Flying Handicap, to be run at Auckland on Saturday.

TROTTING NOTES -

Beminders Acceptances for the Owners’ and Breeders’ charity meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-morrow. Nominations for the Manawatu Trotting Club’s annual meeting will close on Monday. Nominations for the Auckland Trotting Club’s spring meeting and second payments for the Great Northern Derby will be received up till 5 p.m. to-morrow

Nominations for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting will close at 8 p.m. on Monday. ~ Nominations for the Greymouth Trotting Club’s spring meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Nominations for the Wellington Trotting Club’s New Zealand cup trial meeting will close at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The Cup Nominations

The nomination of 15 horses for the New Zealand Cup includes all the best material available in New Zealand, in addition to the two Australian pacers,Evicus and New Derby. Allowing for defections. in the course of training, there is every possibility of a field of at least 12 horses going to the post, quite enough for a race of this class. Last year there were 11 starters, and of these Tempest, Wild Guy, Sir Guy, and Sunny Morn are missing from the list while the additions include New Derby, Gamble Graham Direct, Cloudv Range. Grand, Mogul, Harold Logan, De Soto, and Glenros~ ; e. The last-named injured himself just the big meeting last year, and he has been given a Ion? spell. With Indianapolis on 48 vards and Grand Mogul and Cloudy Ranee on the limit, the Dunedin owner. Mr G. J. Barton, holds a very strong hand and his prospects of winning the cup for the third vear in succession annear bright. Indianapolis is naturally the early favourite and in a class a second tighter, he will be set to give away 48 yards, the start he conceded 12 months ago. War Buoy, who finished second to Indianapolis last year, is on a second tighter mark, but still figures on the front of the handican. and Red Shadow, who finished third, is now on 4min 24sec, or 24 yards behind in this race, as against 4min 23sec and 48 vards behind last year. Of the younger horses nominated. Graham Direct, Gamble. Grand Mogul, and De Soto have proved themselves worthy contenders. and while the former pair are brilliant pacers at their best the most recent racing points to the prospects of De Soto. In 12 months he put together a remarkable sequence of wins and his connexions are confident that he will add the New Zealand Cun to the list. Evicus raced in New Zealand at several meetings last season, but she was not favoured by the best of luck, and it was at the Inter-Dominion championships that she proved a speedy and consistent nacer. Roi I’Or is now the back-marker, and is still living away 60 vards. a brilliant victory 'in the Ashburton Cup in 4min 15 4-ssec having earned him a penalty of 12 yards. Harold Logan was not started last year, but tMs time he will be on 4min 22sec. or 48 yards behind, a handy mark for him if he could be depended uoon to reproduce hiis best form. This is probably the most select field of pacers ever nominated for the New Zealand Cup, and although much will depend upon good fortune in a very searching preparation, the early favourites will be Indianapolis, De Soto. Graham Direct, and Gamble. Owners’ and Breeders’ Meeting That trainers are anxious to give their maiden pacers racing experience is shown by the big list of nominations received for the Stafford Handicap to be decided at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ charity meeting on Saturday. . This fixture must not be confused i with a matinee meeting, at which horses are paraded rqpre for experience than anything else, and to which no prizes are attached. The trophies which will go to the placed horses at next week’s meeting will ensure the keenest competition, and although no penalties will be incurred the meeting will be run strictly according to the ■ Rules of Trotting. Especially pleasing is the entry for the Licensed Victuallers’ Handicap, for those nominated include the New Zealand Cud candidates. Indiananolis, Graham Direct. Grand Mogul, and Red Shadow, besides other high-grade pacers in Rey Spec. Llewellyn’s Pride,’ Guy Junior, and Kingcraft. Included also is that grand trotter Trampfast. All the other events have filled very well, and it is expected that good fields will remain after acceptances close at 5 pjn. to-morrow. New Brighton T.C.

Judging by the acceptances received, the New Brighton Trotting Club holds bright prosnects of another very successful meeting, for the fields are good and class is well represented. The two opening events, which, in past years have been mainly for maid i performers, have both drawn excellent fields of improvers, and most exciting racing is expected. In the Innovation Handicap which is for unhoppled trotters, betting will take a wide range, and while the Methven winner. Guy Hugo, has been penalised 36 yards and will now concede 72 yards start, he will still have many admirers. He also claims an engagement over two miles later in the day. Guy Hugo is a fast improving trotter, and apparently a good stayer. Others with prosnects of success include Royal Parrish, Mother’s Boy. who won a race of similar class at the club’s last meeting, San Michele, who is expected to improve on his Wellington form, Royal Romance, Prince Harvester, and Gay Crusader. The favourites may include Prince Harvester, San Michele, end Guy Hugo. Improving Pacers The Shirley Handicap field includes a number of recent winners and several maiden performers, the latter division including Jane Worthy, a three-year-old sister to Silver de Oro, Bill 8., Royal Flambe, and Starwyn, all young well-bred horses with prospects of winning good races. Included also are the three-year-olds, Effle Parrish and Southern Chief, who claim engagements in the New Zealand Derby, Ginger Jack, a speedy pacer' with bright prospects ahead. Radiant Prince, Coral Prince, and Aide de

Camp, whose recent form has been full of promise. The last-named, after a decisive victory at Methven, is now set to give away 36 yards and the task may not be beyond him. Pot Luck

Pot Luck failed to begin correctly in the Methven Cup on Saturday, and the field had not proceeded far on its journey before he was a long way in the rear He afterwards shpwed a great turn of speed, and at one stage looked like taking a hand in the finish. His next start will be in the Walter Thompson Handicap at New Brighton this week, and on a firm track and with a reasonably good start he will make his presence felt. If form is to be taken as a guide, however, it is difficult to select anything to beat Reporter. who in the Methven Cup gave away 60 yards and finished second in 4min 24-2-ssec. This was the performance of a good class racehorse. At Kurow

King Drusus was unlucky in not scoring a win in the Waitaki Trot, in which he lost 50 or 60 yards at the start, writes “Sentinel” in the Otago “Daily Times.” Master Garry, who won at the Kurow meeting, had previously started in about 60 races without scoring a win. Sunstress, the winner of the Waitaki Trot, was foaled in 1926, and got by Sungod from Queen Pet, by General Pet—Harold’s Rest, by King Harold. -The black gelding Waipahi, who was made favouritft with Cerebus for the Hakataramea Trot, was one of the leaders when he fell after going a little more than two furlongs. He is a five-year-old gelding by Prince Pointer from Olga. Russell. It must be something in the shape of a record for two horses starting a bracket favourite for a light harness race to fall. This occurred at Kurow, where Walpahi and Oerebus started favourite for the Hakataramea Trot. Waipahi fell after going a little more than two furlongs, and the other about 100 yards from the post.

A.J.C. MEETING

SILVER RING BEATEN

ROB ROY SHOWS BRILLIANT FORM

(Received October 7. 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 7. The third day’s racing of the Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting was held at Randwick to-day in warm weather. There was an excellent attendance and the track was in good order. The Gimcrack Stakes provided a splendid tussle There were seven horses in line nearing the post, the winner securing the veidict by half a head. Silver Ring attempted to lead all the way in the Craven Plate but commenced to shorten his stride nearing the distance. Gay Blonde, finishing resolutely, went on to win by a length and a quarter. Sporting Blood (finished with great dash and was just cut out of the place money. The Night Raid colt, Rob Roy, made the opposition appear cheap in the Members’ Handicap. Taking charge shortly after the barrier rise he was never off the bit and he ran home a winner with six lengths advantage.
