PACIFIC RELATIONS CONFERENCE
NEW ZEALAND DELEGATE’S
OPINION
The opinion that the conference of the Institute of Pacific Relations at Yosemite National Park, California, last month was as successful as could be expected is expressed in a letter to his family by Mr Bruce R. Turner, one of the New Zealand delegates to the conference. It will be remembered that the cabled report declared that the conference ended in a “spirit of heavy gloom,” with the delegates reaching a dead end in the search for any effective formula to ensure peace in the Pacific area.
The conference, says Mr Turner, was very well organised and the majority of delegates, including those who had previous conference experience, seemed to be very well satisfied. The only serious criticism was that the agenda was far too wide in scope considering the time limit and that there was too much committee work, which absorbed a great deal of the delegates’ time. He was much'impressed with the personnel of some of the delegations, especially the British, the French, and the Chinese—nearly all of whom were fluent speakers and always very frank and to the point. A good deal of interest centred on the two Russians, Dr. Motylev, who came from Moscow, and M. Romm, the Washington correspondent of “Izvestia.” Dr. Motylev was pleased with the conference giving him a good opportunity to present the U.S.S.R. case, which he did fairly effectively. Mr Turner expects to return to New Zealand on October 12.
